“kuaraci: of speech and fire” - Selection of texts by indigenous women

Greta Edições launches the second title of the Fresta Collection — a collection dedicated to feminisms: “Kuaraci: de fala e fogo” (Kuaraci: of speech and fire). The work brings together texts and images created by indigenous women, under the organization of Ellen Lima Wassu.

The campaign’s main focus is to facilitate the production of the book “Kuaraci: de fala e fogo” (Kuaraci: of speech and fire) , covering all stages of the process — from copyright to text editing, proofreading, design and printing. The texts and images were curated by Ellen Lima Wassu, a prominent activist and researcher on indigenous causes, who brought together a diverse selection of essays, poems, articles and reflections. The work was born from the urgency to value and make visible the history and plurality of indigenous women, also highlighting their cultural and intellectual productions in Portuguese territory.

Ellen Lima Wassu

Ellen Lima Wassu is a pirá, poet, animal, river, tree, wind, Atlantic forest, water, root, spirit and seed. She is also a human being, a poet, teacher, researcher who is currently doing her doctorate in Portugal and lives with body and spirit traveling across the Atlantic full of love and longing. In 2021, she published Ixé ygara returning to 'y'kûá (Urutau) and is part of, among literary magazines and other collections, the work Volta para tua terra (Urutau, 2021), an anthology of anti-fascist and anti-racist poets in Portugal. Her practice combines art, poetry, criticism, essay writing, good encounters, river bathing and conversations with flowers.

About the author

Greta Edições is the publisher of Greta Livraria Feminista, which specializes in books written by women and non-binary people. The publisher was born from the need to deepen knowledge about feminisms — always in an intersectional way — and to increase the visibility of women, especially those whose voices have historically been marginalized, contributing to the construction of a more just and egalitarian world.

As a small, independent publisher, Greta Edições aims to initially publish one to two titles per year. We aim to publish a variety of genres, including activist fiction and nonfiction, feminist translated literature, hybrid memoirs, and gender-questioning texts.

To begin our mission, we launched the Fresta Collection — a collection of feminisms always thought of from an intersectional perspective. The first book in the collection was Por onde elas andam? (Where are they going?, 2024), with a selection of texts by women and lesbians, organized by Alexa Santos, which ensured depth and diversity in the perspective on the struggles presented. Continuing the collection, we are now launching, in 2025, the second volume of the collection: Kuaraci: de fala e fogo, with a selection of texts and images produced by indigenous women , under the organization of Ellen Lima Wassu, to highlight the power and multiplicity of their political, cultural and artistic expressions.
