Storm Kristin destroyed the entire 16km of the Ribeira das Carpalhosas Route, compromising one of the main natural recreational areas for the community and the region. This project aims to recover, adapt and enhance the route.
The campaign “Rebuild the Central Region Together!” emerges as a solidarity response to the damage caused by Storm Kristin, mobilizing citizens to support local recovery projects.
This is exactly what we intend for our Route, which vanished on January 28th. This movement will allow the various affected communities to recover essential spaces, promoting not only physical reconstruction but also strengthening community spirit and resilience. The entire Route lies amidst the ruins of trees, roots, and a river that has changed course.
The Carpalhosas Route was created along the Carpalhosas stream, an unexplored stream that still bears witness to the old mills that proliferated there since the 16th century; it originates in Bidoeira and flows into the Lis River. It is a pedestrian and cycle route where public passages were used, but above all private land (86 written authorizations), which allowed this route to pass through. It was created a few years ago in 3 months by almost 40 volunteers, without introducing non-natural means and respecting the stream.
By integrating this campaign, the project to restore the Carpalhosas River Route directly contributes to the enhancement of the territory, giving the population back a space for practicing sports (hiking, mountain biking, running, etc.) in the heart of nature, restoring leisure and well-being.
