On January 28th , Storm Kristin violently struck the Leiria Polytechnic Institute's residential complex, causing severe damage to the roofs, installed equipment, facades, and windows of the buildings.
The destruction was so extensive that the roof could not be repaired—it had to be completely replaced. The succession of days of heavy rain following the storm further aggravated the situation, allowing significant water to enter and increasing the damage inside.
As soon as conditions permitted, teams on the ground began cleanup, water removal, and damage mitigation operations. However, the renovation works that were underway before the storm had to be suspended for safety reasons, delaying interventions essential to the well-being of residents.
The assessment carried out on the Residence Complex estimates the losses at around 856,000 euros , a figure that represents a huge impact for the institution and for the academic community that depends daily on these accommodations.
The residences are more than just buildings—they are home to hundreds of students who find stability, suitable study conditions, and a safe environment to build their future. Today, this space needs to be rebuilt.
The Polytechnic Institute of Leiria appeals for your support so that we can quickly rebuild the residences, restore safety and comfort to the students, and ensure that no one's academic career is compromised by this tragedy. Every contribution makes a difference.
