After Storm Kristin, which ravaged our region and left a trail of destruction in several locations, the Soutos Cultural and Recreational Association, headquarters of the Soutos da Caranguejeira Folkloric Group (Leiria), was also not spared. The space where we rehearse, socialize, and keep the traditions of our land alive suffered significant damage, leaving a desolate scene. For us, it is not just an infrastructure: it is a meeting point, a place for sharing, and for cultural preservation.
built with the effort and dedication of many people over the years.
We know we weren't the only ones affected. Many families and associations are now facing the challenge of rebuilding. It's a time for solidarity and unity.
We want to rebuild our home and resume operations as soon as possible. To do this, we need everyone's help. Every contribution, regardless of the amount, will make a difference in the recovery of this space that belongs to everyone.
The funds raised are intended for the renovation of the headquarters facilities, including repairs to the roof, false ceiling, lighting, and stage, as well as the replacement of damaged sound equipment.
We would like to thank everyone who has supported us and anyone who can contribute to this cause.
Together, we will be able to rebuild what the storm has taken away.

About the author
The Rancho Folclórico dos Soutos – Caranguejeira is a significant landmark in the history of the village of Caranguejeira, municipality and district of Leiria. Striving to maintain an active position in the world of folklore, its objective is to collect and preserve the memory of traditions, passing the torch to its descendants. Since the mid-20th century, the Rancho Folclórico dos Soutos has built a path within the folkloric community , affiliating itself with the Portuguese Folklore Federation, the Folklore Association of the Leiria-Alta Estremadura Region, and Inatel .
Based on a detailed collection of traditions from the Vila da Caranguejeira region, this group presents diverse costumes, ranging from farmers – both wealthy and poor – to figures of newlyweds, including representations of market vendors, pilgrims, and others, always taking care to faithfully preserve the customs of our people.
The organization annually organizes "Culture for All," showcasing the traditions of various regions of our country, and the international folklore festival: FFICA - Caranguejeira International Folklore Festival , which always features renowned national and international groups. The festival consists of a presentation of a typical regional tradition and folkloric performances. Through this event, it seeks to raise public awareness of the importance and need to preserve intangible heritage for future generations.
Dances like the Bailarico and the Ciranda are representative of the circle dances performed by their ancestors in typical gatherings of the time, whether at village festivals or simply during a casual get-together. In their dances, they carefully depict typical situations from the beginning of the 20th century, namely courtship, work, pilgrimages, etc., thus demonstrating to the present-day people the experiences, beliefs, and customs of their ancestors.
