A project that aims to transform fallen trees in Açude Park into new playground equipment, benches, and sculptures, creating new spaces for discovery and environmental education in Açude Park.

Kristin was a giant's name — and giants were the trees that fell that night in Parque do Açude. In a single instant, the homes of 1001 birds and the cool shade that 1001 people from Pombal sought to rest on sunny days were lost. Spaces for play and socializing were lost, shattered by the fallen giants. The following morning, those who passed by saw a scene of desolation: fallen trunks, exposed roots, silence where there had once been life.

But Pombal is a community that doesn't give up. If the storm took giants from us, we transformed loss into opportunity.
From misfortune arises the desire to create something new, beautiful, useful, and deeply connected to the identity of our park. Because a giant that falls... doesn't cease to be a giant. Nor does it cease to be valuable. That's why this initiative was born: to give a second life to the wood that the storm knocked down.
What once seemed destroyed can be transformed into benches that welcome new stories; outdoor toys and games for children and families; challenges and play equipment for young and old; canoes and natural structures that will allow countless stories to be told; or even sculptures and totems that honor the giants and remind us of their strength — and our own.

We want each piece we create to be a symbol of resilience: when a giant falls, we lift it up together.

The wood left behind by the storm carries memory, history, and identity. With your help, it can become art, leisure, shade, and joy. It can once again be part of the Açude Park—this time, reinvented by the hands of artisans, creators, and the solidarity of our community.

This is an invitation for you to participate in the reconstruction of a special place.
An invitation to transform destruction into creativity, loss into the future, fallen tree trunks into new life.

Help us rebuild the Açude Park.
Help us transform fallen giants into renewed hope.

About the author

The Municipality of Pombal is the entity responsible for the creation, management, and enhancement of this green space, which serves as a leisure area, picnic zone, and privileged setting for activities involving contact with nature. In the past, it has commissioned a sculptor to preserve the memory of a tree along the riverside corridor. This gesture symbolizes the Municipality's commitment to transforming natural losses into new forms of collective identity, preserving history, celebrating the landscape, and strengthening the community's emotional connection to its green spaces.

Budget and due dates

On April 22nd, World Earth Day, we will begin the project by creating the first pieces and preparing the tree trunks that will serve as the base for the sculptures. Over five months of continuous work, the wood will be treated, transformed, and reinvented, gaining new functionalities that will enrich the Açude Park. The goal is for everything to be ready in time to celebrate the Autumn Equinox on September 22nd, returning elements to the park that honor nature and inviting the community to experience it in a renewed way.

For this to be possible, the following steps and budget will be necessary:

- Replacement of two playground equipment pieces: €25,000

- Assessment of the phytosanitary condition of trees that, while remaining standing, show a risk of falling: €4,800

- Wood preparation: €1,900

- Construction of playful and functional furniture: €2,500

- Artistic production of sculptures and totems: €15,000

Installation of parts in the park: €1000

- Communication, community involvement: €500
