Storm Kristin took away our walls, but not our spirit. Help CCR Telheiro bring sport and much more back to our community!
Tropical Storm Kristin left a deep mark on our community. In just a few hours, the CCR Telheiro pavilion, built through the collective effort of the community, was destroyed, leaving a void that is hard to ignore.
The impact goes far beyond the knocked-down walls and destroyed roof. Many young athletes were left overnight without a place to practice the sport they love, but the Telheiro pavilion was always more than just a place to train and play. Alongside sports, it was a space for family and friendship, for values and discipline, for growth and overcoming challenges.
But the effects of the destruction were not limited to federated sports and associated values. The Telheiro Sports Centre offered its space to the community of the Barreira School Centre for the practice of sports activities and the holding of festive and cultural events. On increasingly frequent rainy or hot days, children are deprived of movement, play, and everything that physical activity represents for their healthy development. Without this space, hundreds of children grow up with limitations in the basic conditions they deserve. Furthermore, there is also a protocol with CERCILEI that allowed its users to practice physical activity. In addition to these regular activities, the Telheiro Sports Centre collaborates in various adapted sports activities, such as the final of the National Futsal Cup of the National Association of Sports for Intellectual Development, which was scheduled for our pavilion but cancelled due to the inability of an Azorean team to travel because of bad weather.
But this project goes beyond four walls and a roof. It's about ensuring that future generations have a dignified space to dream, grow, and excel. It's about ensuring they have a space designed to meet the challenges of our time, a space that is more resilient, more functional, and truly at the service of those who matter most: the athletes, the children, the families, and the entire community.
It was in this building that some of those who have worn the colors of Portugal grew up. Where a shy boy became a champion. Where a child discovered what he was capable of and achieved what he thought he couldn't. And it will be here, in the new pavilion, that many others will discover the same, both on and off the field. Because CCR Telheiro doesn't just train athletes, it trains people. People who, wherever life takes them, always carry this building with them.
Telheiro has always known how to unite in difficult times. This is another one of those times. With everyone's support, it's possible to rebuild not just a pavilion, but the heart of our community.
