Red Sisterhood – Women’s Bookstore In the past years when I have travelled and visited all the places that “need to be” visited, I also try to find a Women’s Bookstore and I always put this on my “need to be” visited list. It’s not only a question of the books (this is a vice I have had since I have been able to join the letters) it’s more the question of the “space”. A Women’s Bookstore is a place where you will find other women, that see the world in the same way as you do, they are places where you can calmly listen random conversation on various books, of present happenings or everyday things, where you can join in on a conversation, a workshop or even a projection… a place where a women’s opinion is giving visibility. Books that defend equality, conquers, disputes, sexuality, violence, motherhood, art, poetry and of life.
Aim of this project This initiative is born due to my passion for books e because Women’s Bookstores are UNIQUE places. The aim of this capaign is to be albe to open a bookstore in Porto, which is a place where thoughts, ideas are shared, a Women’s Bookstore.A room of one’s own quoting Virginia Wolf, a space big enough for all of us. Which each one can find their favourite book, your best authors and numerous diferent activities that you can do on your own or with comany. A space that you can enjoy on your own or in the company of others.
Why a Women’s bookstore? A Women’s Bookstore is a place that collects an important bibliographic background, impossible to be found in other more generic bookstores, as these are impossible to find in universities and libraries. In women’s book store we can find everything written by and about Women. A space that specializes in the subject and that you won’t find anywhere else.
Why in Porto?
Porto is a fantastic city. This is obvious not only for the Women that live in this city, but also for those that visit the city. The city is undergoing a massive transformation: every day that goes past Porto receives more visitors, people that want to visit, study or even start over in the city. Porto is opening up to new cultures, new experiences and new habits. In my opinion this is the ideal environment to open a new Women’s Bookstore.
This will also help to grow the Iberian Network of bookstores, female writers and female readers. In my opinion given the geographic proximity i tis import to create more spaces where women can fin answers that mobilize women in the Iberian Peninsula. The Red Sisterhood – Women’s Bookstore will be joining the network of women’s bookstores that already exist in the Iberian Peninsula (Galize, Madrid, Barcelona, Seville).
The books: On the bookshelves of the Red Sisterhood you will find literature specialized and written for or by women, biographies, feminist essays (in various areas and subjects: science, anthropology, sociology, history, education, heath, philosophy, eroticism) theme LGBT, Queer theory, non sexist children’s literature, art, romance, poetry, comics …
Besides the books In a Women’s Bookstore you will find books but also a space that is open to various initiatives that benefit the training, education and imagination and fosters a thing as abstract and trivial that is called culture. We will have Reading clubs, music, workshops for adults and children. We will also have exhibits and book presentations, talks, storytelling and other very interesting delicacies.
About the author
About the promoter My name is Aida, I am 33 years old and currently live in Porto, but that is not very important. What is important is that one day I looked the rollercoaster (life) and I thought:
“I have accomplished so little I might be better off as a librarian”
I have always loved books and have always dreamt of having a bookstore (a cinema too).
When I was a child I used to dream of being at the counter of a bookstore, one of those that is filled with the smell of books, history and words and not with freshner and disinfectant of a mal. I dreamt of spending my days in a space where I could celebrate book day, the Women’s day, where I could organize story telling sessions of fairytales and Reading clubs. Book presentations, concerts and film projections (this way I can also make my cinema owner dream come true).
I dreamt of a place where people could go to escape from their daily routine, even if only for an instant and see, read and listen to everything that the world has reserved for them. In 2010 this dream started to become restless ( I am told this is the first symptom that the dreams want to became real) after I visited for the first time a Women’s Bookstore in Madrid and in 2009 in Barcelona and meeting the librarians that made this dream come true. It was on this journey that I first saw my dream in 3D. And I thought this was just a childhood dream!

The restlessness starting to transform itself into a fortress, a fortress that was ready to follow her way and fight for what she believed in. I believe that a women’s bookstore is a space where people can find themselves and it is not a utopia.. and that the sorority relationships are pure complicity e these will overcome any adversity. Having found the keywords (which are in bold and that also identify), I start this campaign that I know is filled with difficulties, but is also filled with people (specially female) that will support me with kindness and firmly (“if there is no kindness then this is not my revolution”).. and that is why I am here… because I believe that the dreams shared will became real quicker and in a gesture of freedom I give birth for all of you : the Campaign “Red Sisterhood – Women’s Bookstore”.
