During the pandemic, two young friends met for a walk. One of them had attended a psychologist for 5 years for depressive problems and another had just started attending after the death of his parents.
Both came to the conclusion that they were not prepared for the emotional management of their problems and that they had to go alone in search of stability.
In this line of reasoning, they took an extra step – “what if the tools we found along the way, which were so useful to us, were disseminated and taught to the population? Could it save thousands of people from suffering?” - They thought.
They didn't know the answer to this question, but they promised to go look for it.
"I have two kinds of problems, urgent and important. Urgent ones aren't important, and important ones are never urgent." - Dwight D. Eisenhower 34th President of the United States
Mental health in recent decades is a problem that fits into the second category: it was important, but not urgent. However, after the pandemic, the course changed - it became an urgent problem, even more so in a country like Portugal, the 2nd in Europe where this type of disease is most prevalent.
What's the best solution? As the saying goes, “prevention is better than cure”. It is necessary to invest in the prevention of this problem and not in the remedy. More psychologists and more drugs are measures to intervene in the symptom of a problem that has already surfaced. Are measurements useful? Of course they are. But what if it were possible to minimize the problem from even surfacing? As a result, lower costs and saving the population from suffering? – Prevention is the Solution!
To prevent, R3SET believes that it is necessary to invest in EDUCATION . For this reason, the R3SET Association created an innovative curriculum that aims to develop young people's socio-emotional skills at school. Competencies that are correlated with greater well-being and better mental health.
This innovative curriculum incorporates 3 strands, each associated with a project partner, specialized in the area. These aspects are:
-
Montessori Pedagogy – Porto Montessori School
-
Meditation for Children – The Little Buddha
-
Social-emotional skills - Original Kids
Our dream and vision is to have a compulsory subject in this forum in the near future – a subject in which socio-emotional skills are developed!
And we have good news…! We can say that in the next school year we will take the first step to make this dream come true: Our curriculum will be implemented in 3 public schools in the Lisbon area, working with those who need it most.
Do you want to contribute to doing something different? Support our project and help us to mitigate mental health problems, so present in our Portugal. Let's make R3SET together with society!
