The “Garden of the Senses” creates a micro-forest with native species at the EB2 school in Marrazes. The micro-forest will be a living laboratory where students learn and grow together through nature.
Inspired by Akira Miyawaki's method, the "Garden of the Senses" project is based on the dense planting of native species, allowing the creation of a resilient and biodiverse ecosystem on a small scale, in one of the outdoor spaces of Basic School No. 2 in Marrazes.
The proposal to create a microforest at the school arises as a response to the need to enhance outdoor spaces, which were heavily damaged by Storm Kristin, while simultaneously promoting active environmental education and the requalification of spaces to mitigate the impacts of climate change.
The "Garden of the Senses" Project will be a living laboratory for interdisciplinary learning, enhancing curriculum development in the Areas of Curricular Autonomy (DAC). It is also a participatory space for developing environmental education activities, involving students, teachers, and the community.
It also aims to create leisure and social spaces for students, installing wooden tables outdoors next to shaded areas.
