Two changemakers committed to change the world through people, decided to implement awareness-raising sessions on Alcoholism in São Tomé. A long journey lies ahead and, without your help, will not be the same. Thank you!
Created by changemakers Helena Portugal and Joana Gomes, under the Training Spirit '16 promoted by the non-governmental organization WACT - We are Changing Together, the social project "Rhombu" [ "course" in Latin] aims to combat alcohol abuse in the communities of Guadalupe, Agostinho Neto and Morro Peixe (District Lobata, São Tomé e Príncipe).
São Tomé is the second country of PALOP (Portuguese-Speaking African Countries) with higher consumption of pure alcohol per capita. Taking into consideration the psychological, physical and socio-economic damage that alcohol abuse cause, and the early age of consumption by São Tomé e Príncipe population, Rhombu project will leave for São Tomé, on August 14, 2016, for 6 weeks, proposing to carry out Awareness and Sensitization sessions on Alcoholism, for young people between 17 and 22 years old, in order to empower them to build solutions in this regard. Also in cooperation with Health Center professionals of Guadalupe, Rhombu will perform screening and interventions sessions regarding alcohol consumption.
The distribution of the Awareness Handbook for Alcoholism ("Manual de Sensibilização para o Alcoolismo"), previously elaborated in Portugal, will enable to continue the project, by encouraging health and education professionals and local NGOs to implement these practices. With this project, we hope to motivate people of São Tomé to choose another rhombu. In order to the heavy alcohol consumption ceases to be a barrier in the rhombu of some people in São Tomé e Principe, let's make the difference!
