To Sakhalin is a biographical performance about a time lapse tiling in Anton Chekhov’s life, a drift in a man’s life.
To Sakhalin is a subversive perspective about the journey in a man's life to hell. Telling the story of the journey that Anton Chekhov made to Sakhalin penal colony To Sakhalin also explores the reasons behind such odd decision and the signals the effects it might have caused.
This is the first performance of Manga Theatre in Portugal. At Teatro Meridional March 6-17, 2019.
As I remember it, Sakhalin seems to me a perfect hell. Anton Chekhov, December 1890
We start our journey right after Anton Chekhov being honoured with the Pushkin prize in 1888. Then... well then, let us meet at Teatro Meridional. Really drawing close now.
About 20 professionals from different artistic areas and nationalities have come together to help this idea come to life. We would like to first and foremost thank all of them because if it wasn't for their generosity giving their time, effort, expertise, passion this project would never have been possible.
We believe in this hopeful and fragile way of making art. We chose to use Crowdfunding as a tool because we see this way of financing the arts as more truthful then state subsidies and because it is a direct social movement, begging for participation, honest and less elitist.
Manga Theatre would also like to thank all its sponsors and partners: Casa do Moleiro, Companhia Olga Roriz, ACERT Tondela, Lisbon City Council and Teatro Meridional.
