The history of car hire in Portugal is not chronologically very different from that of other countries. There are records of the emergence of horse-drawn hire vehicles during the seventeenth century in major European cities, and Lisbon was no exception. Until the advent of the automobile, various types of horse-drawn vehicles, some with alterations that allow better adaptation to the rental service were used; the most notable of these would be a taximeter, allowing to accurately calculate the fare, ending the need for further adjustment. The term, still used today, taxi-cab, comes precisely from the junction of the words taximeter and cabriolet, a vehicle widely used as voiture-de-place. The first motor cabs began working in Lisbon in 1907, but taximeters would only be mounted in motorized taxis around 1910.
