Paulo Covas in the IMMAF World Championships Amateur MMA 2016

Martial Arts practitioner for 13 years and doing MMA since 2008, Paulo Covas won the tryouts to the Portuguese National team of MMA that will represent his country at the world's largest tournament in Las Vegas. Let's help him!

After winning the Tryouts at the National Open MMA, Paulo was called to represent the Portuguese National Team of Amateur MMA in the Featherweight category at the World Championship of Amateur MMA which will be held in Las Vegas from 5th to 10th of July during the UFC Fan Expo, Las Vegas FightWeek, which will be broadcast by the UFC FIGH PASS and other television networks of combat sports.

This tournament, as has been said, is the largest taking place around the world and where the best athletes and coaches will be present, which makes it an excellent opportunity, not only to test the Portuguese MMA, but also for the exchange of experiences with all participants and enrich the entire national sport with new knowledge.

 Being a sport without financial support from the government, athletes who are part of the Portuguese team, will have to bear the travel costs by themselves. As Paulo is an amateur athlete and having passed the qualifying event a little close to the World Championship date, he is unable to gather all the funds to participate in the tournament and represent his national team. It is here that this initiative takes action, in order to try to cover some of the costs required for the tournament and help Paulo to fulfill a dream by which he has worked and fought so hard.

About the author

Paulo  was born in 1988 and is currently 27 years old. He's been practicing martial arts since he was 14, and has been dedicated specifically to MMA for about 8 years, however since his childhood he has been dedicated to sport, belonging to various federated volleyball teams.

He's part of the Dojo Ko Tora Nin, which exists since 1997, starting with the practice of Ninjutsu, which he was part of for 4 years and later diversified, integrating other martial arts, such as Ruy San Ryu and more recently MMA.

He has a record of 3-0, having won all fights in which he participated, by submission, two of which in the 1st round and the other on the 2nd.

Supporting Paulo, there's a very experienced staff: Coach Vítor Formiga, martial arts practitioner for over 23 years and instructor for at least 10 and Coach Luis Barneto, which leads the Portuguese delegation to the World Championship for the 3rd time. Paulo has also more than 20 companions who regularly train with him, helping him to improve technically and physically.

Budget and due dates

The costs for the participation in this Championship will be around 2.000 € :

- Registration and accommodation from 3 to 10 July and equipment - 835 dollars (about 750 euros at the time) .

-Plane Lisbon - Las Vegas and return - 1,250 Euros.

- Commission of 5 % + VAT of the amount collected on the campaign by the PPL - 61.5 €

This campaign is not counting the total budget of the trip, but only half that amount, in order to help achieve the total budget.
