Night has fallen. You are in the waiting room of a psychiatric ward, wearing a surgical mask.
Suddenly, you see a doctor arguing with a woman. They do not speak but you can feel a strong tension.
You decide to follow them through the bleak corridors, until you reach a Ballroom, where everyone is dancing at a party, cabaret-styled, back in 1949.
And so it begins your adventure…
“And They Died Happy Forever” is a site specific, immersive show, that takes place in the most famous psychiatric Hospital in Portugal: Júlio de Matos.
The story is a dark fairytale, a crossover between a 14th century love tragedy – Pedro and Inês de Castro - and the invention of the lobotomy by Egas Moniz, the Portuguese doctor who won the Nobel Prize in 1949.
One does not need to know the historic background to understand what the story is about. It will be self-explanatory and you will be given a summary of the plot.
The characters move freely around the building, interpreting the scenes through body movement. Visitors may follow whichever character they choose, or simply interact with the set.
