This is a book made of passion about a passionate story. The Carris Mining filed, an old isolated outpost on the Gerês Mountains in Northern Portugal. This book's first edition was sold out one year after it was published. There are many people interested in this story, so I decided to make a second edition of the book!
Behind the ruins lay fights for the land, stories of miners, the day to day life of sacrifice and impositions that took this place to be a singularity in Portugal.
But, this was an unwritten story and it was this challenge that I gave to myself several years ago. Little by little I was able to join the pieces of a puzzle and cleaning the dust of a «painting» that was becoming more and more fascinating with each new discovery!
Since its foundation on the 1940’s of the XXth Century with the presence of the Nazi Germany, though its apogee on the 50’s with the creation of an social advanced mining complex, and through its decline e rebirth on the 70’s, until its eventual irrevocable closer at the end of that decade, the book 'Minas dos Carris - Histórias mineiras na Serra do Gerês' (‘Carris Mines – Mining stories on the Gerês Mountains’) is an individual research effort that prolonged for more than seven years between dusty archives, thousands of kilometres on foot through the mountains, personal interviews with people in Portugal and in other countries (like Argentina and Australia), that allowed me to have a large amount of stories, information and photographs that allow to trace the history of the Carris Mines. All of this is now in this book. This exciting work intended above all to explore in each new discovery the story and the history of those that made a lonely and harsh place, a place of life on the desolate mountain but also to show how much we still have to preserve in our collective memory.
