Internationaly known as “A Closer Medicine: Mozambique”, this is an international volunteering project promoted by AEFML (Students’ Association of the Lisbon Medical School) in partnership with local mozambicians associations.
The main goal is to provide medical and social help to a community with difficult access to health (either due to lack of money, transport, or even due to the stereotypes against medical assistance).
Our Partners:
· AVOMACC– A local association that does a great work helping families in need. They provide school, food and security to young children, while employing the mothers to work in the association farm. This way the family has the basic needs provided to grow in a sustainable way.
· DREAM of Africa – A health care center developed by the Italian “Comunità di Sant'Egidio” that focus mainly on the prevention and treatment of HIV+ within the community.
So what do we do there?
· Health Check-ups to mothers and children
· Referral to specialized care when needed
· Formations and Trainings on: maternal health, HIV/AIDS, family planning, infectious diseases, basic management of house affairs and much more.
· HIV screening
· Home visits
· Help with study curriculum
In 2012, during the 9 weeks of the project we screened, counseled and monitored more than 150 children and 80 mothers in need. About 50 formations were done to children educators and workers of AVOMACC, dozens of HIV tests with respective monitoring and even deworming sessions in targeted children.
This year we want to continue the job done, assess the state of health and education focusing on these moms and their children, who would otherwise have great difficulty in accessing health.
Are we needed?
Without a doubt. The little school of AVOMACC welcomes the most in need children and families within the community. Many of them have never been to Maputo (20km) or seen the sea. Most use the local “magicians” to cure themselves because they don’t have the possibility to move to the Hospital or simply don’t trust the medical assistance - many die or develop chronic illnesses due to this inefficient health care.
With the last edition some mothers found to be HIV + (in a region where nearly half the population is HIV+) before beginning the symptoms of the disease, allowing a premature intervention that can save many lives. Screening for serious diseases (eg cancer) or potentially serious (ex: Malignant Hypertension) was done. Diverse formations and a personal accompaniment were made to the mothers.
The teachers implemented the "Scald-head time" in which all children are now regularly disinfected. Children were taken to hospital, some with HIV +, others with different acute illnesses. Dozens were treated for scald-head. All received surveillance of their health through a complete objective examination.
Much has been done, but you have to believe it when we say: Much remains to be done!
We want the project to have continuity and sustainability, only then will it contribute to the sustainable development within this community.
We need you! How can you help?
Our goal is to send, from July to September 2013, two teams of four volunteers to Matola (Mozambique) and that's why we need your help!
To accomplish this project we need € for travel, food, transport and accommodation.
It takes 10 minutes and some € and you can be part of this project and make it possible!!
