The Project "Geraz com Querença" is an innovative initiative that aims to mobilize different rural areas of the municipality of Viana do Castelo, which are regions of Deão, Moreira, Santa Maria e Santa Leocádia of Geraz Lima, through the use of multiple instruments of intervention and territorial community, which has as its fundamental objective exploiting endogenous assets of these territories and contribute to a positive assertion of cultural identity and location of the quality of life in rural areas, gives strength to the onset and development of a new process for developing optimal and sustainable in these areas.

The cities where they develop the project have a common historical identity and which together constitute a territorial unit with ecological coherence and landscape and with a historical and cultural heritage. This territory, in addition to growing unemployment and emigration, faces a process of abandonment of agricultural and forestry sharp, for which we need to find alternatives.

The simple idea is to import skilled people to the region, through a Mission Team (consisting of 9 recent graduates), with the task of performing duties individual and collective, coordinated and directed the economic and social regeneration of these territories. For the nine months, each youth will develop a set of activities that involve the regeneration strategy for the region, some of which reach worldwide and will be carried out together with all of the team members, and others will be linked to the development of individual projects with purpose to create future employment.
The cities have a significant number of endogenous assets with the potential to generate more wealth and more jobs, thereby boosting economic activities that help in the recovery of endogenous assets is defined as one of the project objectives.
Similarly, promoting the cultural and social identity of the four cities that form  part of the region, thereby helping to increase collective efficiency and self-esteem of the people who live and work in Geraz Lima is another goal.
A third target is to qualify the area as a living space for those who already live there, and for young people and new families, including those most qualified.

About the author

The COOPDES was created in 2010 and it is a cooperative public interest limited responsibility, wherein more than 50% of the capital necessarily has to be signed by a public entity, which gives credibility and assurance support.

The project “Geraz com Querença” is promoted by COOPDES, by city council of Viana do Castelo and Polytechnic Institute of Viana do Castelo having as partner organizations the four cities of the municipality of Viana do Castelo, wich are regions of Deão, Moreira, Santa Maria and Santa Leocádia of Geraz do Lima.
