The Green Angra is a project that intends to publish a book about the ancient and the current gardens of the city of Angra do Heroísmo, in the Azores. These pleasant places where we like to walk around, or to stay and contemplate only, carry with them a little of the history of the people and the times in which they were built. They are like objects from the past with the capacity to awaken memories, althoug they are much more fragile than any other human construction because they are veget...

Although it was built in 1814, the first public garden in the city no longer exists. After that, other gardens were built, destroyed, abandoned and forgotten; and once socializing places soon they became passageways: the Port of Pipas garden, the Corte Real garden...

My purpose with this book is to rescue the memory of these places and to return them to everyone´s knowledge.

I collected a lot of information and images about how the people from Angra accompanied the scientific and artistic world and built their outer leisure spaces and, more importantly, how they used them. For this reason, the subjects in this book are the following

The Public Promenade of Alto das Covas, or S. Gonçalo

The Field of Grass

The Porto de Pipas garden

The Agricultural Society experimental farm

The Duque da Terceira public garden

The Corte-Reais Garden

Monte Brasil - the City Park

Small projects and afforest and decoration campaigns

The Civil Government garden

The Episcopal Palace garden

About the author

I am the promoter of this project . My name is Maria Manuel, I have a master degree in History and I always enjoy investigating. I have dedicated myself to the history and the local patrimony and, therefore, I have commissariei several exhibitions at the museum where I work (Toys, Appearance and Dailylife, Little World), I gave some lectures (Dressing the Faith- canonicals and liturgical clothing; Collecting the Iª World War and the Azores, among others) and published articles on these themes (such as The Duke of Terceira garden - celebrating its 120 years).

And this is my son, Manuel, who is doing a degree in Sculpture at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Lisbon, but he has always been interested in design (graphic and product), photography and drawing. Last year he won a medal in the specialization of medals and that is why some of his works are included in a traveling exhibition of works of Fine Arts´ students, which is now going around Japan. Working together with him has been ... too much.
