África Mostra-se - African Film Festival and African Culture started in 2011.
África Mostra-se ’14 – African Diasporas
23, 24, 25, 29, 30, 31 of May and 1st of June - Lisbon
África Mostra-se - African Film Festival and African Culture started in 2011, as a result of a shared will to create room and to introduce artistic creations from Africa or related, to some extent, to African cultures. The first edition was held in 2011.
The aim was the creation of an annual festival which promoted the contact between the public and artistic and cultural manifestations coming from all African countries (and not only from Portuguese speaking countries), in order to introduce new images and new modes of expression from this continent. We became interested - and we are still curious - in developing a shared thought about the way the African continent is perceived, countering the (yet) general tendency to its standardisation.
Although the festival had been proposed considering the cinema as the centrepiece of the event, we did not devalue other artistic fields. On the contrary, the following elements have always been part of the programme: concerts, painting and sculpture exhibitions, theatre and dance performances and the presentation of literary works. In addition, discussions and informal meetings between the team, special guests and the public, and initiatives aiming to train participants in different areas have always been promoted.
As is the case throughout several other European countries, we relish the prospect of making África Mostra-se a reference in the festivals circuit and European film festivals about Africa. We aim to renew the intercontinental relationships based on creativity. Let's unwrap news and offer an amazing cultural experience to our audience, revealing the creativity and the point of view of who lives, knows and is interested in the African continent.
The almost nonexistent budget we provide does not allow us to offer the audience everything we wanted and everything it so much deserves. Thus, this campaign is an opportunity to raise the much-needed funds to pay the artists with whom we would like to work in this edition. Then again, we want to bring internationally acknowledged films (many of which never debuted in Portugal!) and we believe them to be an added value to our audience, due to their quality and relevance; films from different parts of the world that pore over the theme of this edition: African Diasporas.
Counting on you, we know that we will be able to show the best of what is done in Africa in the 4th edition of África Mostra-se!
