A man. A boat. A world. These are the three vertices of a triangle which can be explained with a single-handedround-the-world yacht race. Crowhurst had entered the race in hopes of winning a cash prize from The Sunday Times to aid his failing business. Instead, he encountered difficulty early in the voyage, and secretly abandoned the race while reporting false positions, in an attempt to appear to complete a circumnavigation without actually circling the world. Evidence found after his disappearance indicates that this attempt ended in insanity and suicide.

The world was changing. It was 1968. With its events such as the Vietnam War or the first hydrogen bomb. At a technological level, Intel is founded and the Apollo 8 is launched. Man began to test its limits. Lacked proof. Donald Crowhurst was an amateur sailor, but he had a dream: winning the single-handedround-the-world yacht race. Departed on the same day that ended the Vietnam war. 31 October. The setbacks were many and soon realized it would be only a dream. Skirted the system to escape alive. Headed to Brazil where he hoped that all participants still in evidence for him to pass. Waited. Only him and the sea. Not told that when he was told that the dream becomes reality, their ghosts would gain greater proportions than their own life. The account of more than just a journey of 243 days.

A Kind of Black Box has sought throughout its history, to make known to the general public new artistic values of the cultural Portuguese fabric.

Thus, this project has not only a new playwright (Hugo Barreiros - author nominated for the Prize Bernardo Santareno, best show of 2010 with "The Walls of Elsinore") as well as a new double-creators / directors (Tobias Monteiro and Cecilia Laranejira) , thus allowing the projection of promising young local artists.

Staged by Tobias Monteiro and assistance of Cecilia Laranjeira, the proposal is pioneer in the New Portuguese Playwriting and simultaneously at the intersection of established artists with emerging fabric in the cultural scene of the country, committed to revealing one of the most fantastic maritime adventures: single-handedround-the-world yacht race, intensively addressing the human condition in the face of major adversity: loneliness, lies, insanity and the paths we choose, in this show, are constantly called into question.

Portugal and the Sea always had a special relationship.

When, at the beginning of the Discoveries, the Portuguese decided to demonstrate entrepreneurship turning to the sea, and all that he represented (the unknown, fear of failure, death), overcoming fears and achieving victories unparalleled, opened the door the heyday of Portugal as a country, power and empire.

Currently the political and economic situation in which we find lacks a ray of hope. The hope may once again come from the sea.

The sea has always been part of our designs, our solutions as People. We thought, in this troubled time, to (re) approach the sea through the project "243". Interestingly phases of decline of the country have always been linked to the remoteness of the sea. Contrary to this trend, we as artistic company, want to make this bridge between entrepreneurial culture and history.

The objectives of this project:

  1.  Make known to the general public new artistic values of the Portuguese cultural fabric;
  2.  Release a new double creators / directors;
  3.  Allow the projection of promising young local artists;
  4.  Allow the intersection of established artists with emerging fabric now emerging in the cultural scene of the country;
  5.  Reveal one of the most amazing marine adventures: single-handed, round-the-world yacht race (Donald Crowhurst - based on true events);
  6.  Address, so intense, the human condition in the face of major adversity: loneliness, lies, insanity, and the paths we choose, in this show, are constantly called into question;
  7.  Disseminate internationally the Portuguese culture.
