“Pélago” is the script for an academic fiction short film that follows the attempts of 21-year-old Ema to eliminate insomnia. The character is characterized by her patience, wisdom and calm, which opposes the mental state of confusion in which she finds herself. Through her writing in a notebook, the character describes in the comfort of her room, and sometimes with a humorous tone, her attempts to eliminate these episodes once and for all.
Her insomnia has recently appeared, and in order to make it disappear, the young woman tries all possible solutions and remedies. Ema initially reads a self-help book for her problem. She tries to buy several teas, but ends up getting nauseous. Then he tries to meditate, but is easily distracted by his cell phone. She also keeps all her watches in drawers and cupboards, but she can hear their 'tic-tacs', which prevent her from falling asleep. Also try taking a hot bath, in order to relax, however, without effect. Try liquid melatonin. He also goes to a psychiatry consultation, also without result. Finally, she swallows some sleeping pills, without effect, which induces her to cry.
Finally, Ema writes in her diary her idea of going for a walk on the beach to calm down. At that moment, there is a recap of the reality of his situation, highlighting the dark scenario in which he finds himself. However, an unexpected situation occurs, which leaves Ema perplexed - her room is flooded and her feet submerged in water. As you walk through the water, you suddenly find yourself on the beach.
Ema sees some elements from her room in the sand and water of the beach. Agitated and confused by this change, the character walks aimlessly and devoid of balance and notion of what to do.
Ema is in the ocean, almost submerged, until a sudden wave submerges her face completely.
Ema finds herself in her bed, her hair and face wet.
About the author
We are a group of students who are developing a short film called "Pélago" as a final project for the Audiovisual Communication Technologies degree at the Escola Superior de Media Artes e Design.
Like all young artists, we experiment, test and never limit ourselves when it comes to knowing and doing. Because the truth is that art is constantly evolving, just like life. And we are changing with it.
It is through cinematography that we seek to convey what, for us, is most important. And it may or may not be momentary. We can try to transmit it our whole life, even. Or we can limit ourselves to showing what is important now.
We are focused, passionate and always want to give our best, because we have the easiest and, at the same time, hardest job in the world: bringing emotion to people in the form of art. And that's what, with this project; this story we will try to do. We're going to fail at a lot of things, just as we're going to get it right. Because art is made of mistakes and successes. It is the reflection of life. And we intend to take advantage of both.
