CONFINS is the first book by photojournalist Enric Vives-Rubio. Far from the immediacy of the news, the work, done during the pandemic, is an invitation to reflect on the territory, borders and confinement we all go through.
Confinis: The border
The word confine seems to have always been used as a synonym for a remote area, a distant location, and it takes us to an imaginary place where everything is possible. The term confines comes from the Latin confinis which means border that, with the Covid 19 pandemic, recovered the essence of the real meaning of confinement.
DuringFebruary and Mars 2021, it was forbidden to leave the municipality of residence on weekends. From this mandatory closure came the idea of this meditative work on territory and confinement. Walking around the limits of Lisbon, trying to walk on the line that separates the capital from the neighboring municipalities or as close to it as possible. Physical and natural borders imposed the rhythm and limits of walking along the limits of the municipality of Lisbon.
Photography as a tool to think
To a large extent, this photographic project is a meditative work on territory and confinement, which leads us to reflect on borders, limits, restrictions, loneliness, emptiness and, also, to revisit spaces close and geographically distant from the city center in the context of a lockdown. For this reason, in addition to the people - who move around in a "hygienic" way -, nature also shows itself to be bucolic and leads us to question how long we have to limit ourselves to the borders that arise where we can walk.
Confines. The book
This photographic project was designed to be published in a book. Not only as a simple support to visualize the photographs but also as an artistic object. The book allows us to reread the images, add value to the photographs and lead the reader to look beyond the images.
In addition to the photographic core, the book presents two more important facets: the texts that present the work in a theoretical and literary way; and the graphic design of the book that makes it possible to understand the path taken in the book.
Texts
The book will have two texts of very different nature. Originals in Portuguese but translated into Catalan and English.
One of them will be a literary text written by the writer Rui Cardoso Martins, journalist and author of several books (especially the “Let the invisible man pass” awarded by the Portuguese Association of Authors).
The other is a theoretical presentation text by Lorena Travassos, a PhD in photography from Universidade Nova de Lisboa and also a photographer.
Design and pagination
The design, graphics and pagination are the result of a close collaboration with Studio WABA.
The proposal of the team of designers is that the idea of limit that the photographic work proposes is a concept also present in the graphic part of the book. Likewise, location references are present very subtly throughout the book and help the reader to locate himself.

Estou incrivelmente surpreso.
Estou incrivelmente surpreso.
Enric
