We want to take part in a workshop on Syntropic Agriculture in Spain. It is a simple but radical concept for sustainable agriculture. Afterwards, we want to share what we learnt in Mozambique and Portugal.

Syntropic Agriculture is a system developed by Ernst Gotsch in Brazil (Agenda Gotsch, www.agendagotsch.com). It uses the natural systems observable in tropical forests to create productive forests that include food and cash crops, and simultaneously restore the local environment, promote biodiversity and protect water resources. Syntropic Agriculture can be applied on a large or small scale, on commercial or non-commercial farms. A Syntropic forest does not require irrigation or fertiliser.

Between 19-25 March, Ernst Gotsch will be leading a workshop at the La Loma Viva permaculture centre (www.lalomaviva.com), in Granada, Spain, where he will teach the basic concepts and science of Syntropy, along with practical field demonstrations.

We believe that this system offers a viable and sustainable solution for both the small farmers with whom we work in Mozambique and for those wishing to give agriculture in Portugal a future.

La Loma has shown their belief in us by offering a fully sponsored place at the workshop, which will go to Paulo, to support our work in Mozambique. Now we are asking for your help to raise 50% of the cost of a second place for Rebecca, who will then share what she has learnt at a hands-on workshop in Portugal. Our long term vision is to establish centres and demonstration sites for Syntropic Agriculture in Portugal so as to spread the word and start the revolution!

About the author

Paulo and Rebecca have been working in Northern Mozambique since 2001, where they trade in agricultural products and support small farmers to improve their production through training, promotion of new crops and technical support. They are specialists in agribusiness and sustainable rural development. They believe that agriculture should be economically, socially and environmentally sustainable, respecting the environment and biodiversity. They have been inspired by the work of Ernst Gotsch and want to take his message to the world, starting with Portugal and Mozambique.

Budget and due dates

€650 = 50% of the cost of the course (€1,300), including board and lodging.

    First impressions. Primeiras impressões.

End of day 2 in a beautiful place. It's quite intense, and very interesting, and we're learning lots. I'm so happy to be here, thanks to all of you! There's also a great mix of people participating, from all over the world, all apparently having a lot of fun. But certainly no late nights, the physical work means everyone is in bed by 10. Thank you all again, this is an amazing opportunity.

O curso superou todas as minhas expectativas.

    Melhores cumprimentos,
    Rebecca
