Livros de Ontem is pleased to present you the first book by Carolina Mesquita, "The Matriarchs," a journey through the stories of strong Portuguese women.

'As Matriarcas' is a book of memories and images of villagers from the interior of Portugal. It shares the stories of strong women in our communities. Dona Maria Teresa, for example, who gave fame to the Vinhais smoker. Or Dona Amelia Pessoa, who dreamed that her children would not emigrate away from Sonim. Traditions, poems, experiences and places, threatened by eminent desertification. By knowing them we are thus instinctively loving, valuing and protecting them.

 

About the author

Carolina Mesquita was born in Lisbon in 1990. As a child, she climbed mountains with her father and absorbed the stories of the women in her family. Also in small, had what is called "carpenters," and did not know how to be quiet. That has not changed. He graduated in business management from Universidade Católica Portuguesa and likes to create projects, mainly focused on sustainability, technology and food. This book was one of those endeavors. She traveled by bicycle to the villages of the 'Northern North' of Portugal, to listen, and simply to be with the women she met, a generation that will not be repeated. In an urgency to preserve something of them, something of their own, and something of our Portugueseness. This is your first book.
