Help us releasing the album "Orquestra Jazz de Setúbal - Em cada esquina um amigo"

This is an ambitious project that aims to present a record by the Orquestra Jazz de Setúbal at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations of April 25th.

José Afonso is an inescapable name in Portuguese music. His vast work is a national legacy and his songs and life are intertwined with the struggle for Freedom and Democracy, which is why he is one of the names that is part of our collective memory when we think of April 25th.

On the 50th anniversary of April 25th, we want to celebrate him, listen to him and add our voice to his.

And also because the connection between Zeca and Setúbal is strong and he is one of our own, we felt this desire to revisit his work, taking a different musical approach, with unique instrumentation and the sound that characterizes this Orchestra.

To conceive this project, OJS invited some of the most important composers and arrangers in the field of jazz to recreate and adapt themes chosen by each of them from Zeca's extensive oeuvre. 

After recording the album in November 2023, all that remains is for the editing, mixing and mastering process to be completed so that the factory can start printing CDs and Vinyl of our "Em cada esquina um amigo"!

About the author

Orquestra Jazz de Setúbal (OJS) started in 2021, with artistic and executive direction by Luís Cunha and Sérgio Gabriel, bringing together in a single cast, renowned Jazz musicians with a new generation of talented young people, assuming in this project a community philosophy in sharing musical and human experiences.

OJS is a permanent formation. Having improvised music and Jazz in its genesis, the orchestra has a philosophy of dynamism and versatility that allows it to create and intervene in different musical environments, whether through its own productions or through partnerships, always with the aim of involving this style musical.

For this project, OJS counted on Planície Sonora - Associação Artística to produce the album and its shows, and with the support of Sociedade Musical Capricho Setubalense, which hosts regular rehearsals, in addition to the indispensable support of Setúbal's city hall.
