A Flute for Rui Caeiro

I study at the University of Évora with a low range borrowed flute, with many years of wear. With this campaign, I intend to raise funds for the acquisition of my own instrument.

My name is Rui Caeiro and I am a student in the Flute class of teacher Monika Streitová, at the University of Évora.

I never had a personal flute. I have been doing my studies with a Yamaha 371 Flute over 16 years old, from the SFUM “Os Amarelos”.

I have never been able to acquire a flute, as I come from a single-parent family, where resources are very finite. My mother died of cancer when I was just 14 years old and I discovered early on how difficult life is. I practically feel that I didn't have a teenager and that I soon had to learn to do a little bit of everything to help at home, both at home and at subsistence level. That is why I have always taken all the achievements I have achieved very seriously, being the most proud thing for me to enter the University, even after my life has turned 180 degrees.

My mother died when I was going to move to the 6th grade of conservatory. As the pursuit of my artistic studies implied living in Beja, as in Moura (my homeland) there was no secondary in Music, I ended up giving up the idea of going, having stayed in Moura in the Science and Technology course, to stay closer to remaining family.

Even so, I struggled and managed to be a student of school merit, finishing high school with an average of 17 points. However, I always felt a voice within me that led me to music. So, against all adversities, I resorted to the help of my former Flute Teacher with free course classes, and to some classes with teacher Monika, having done tests after 4 months for the University, which I managed to enter. my faith in God and with a lot of work and focus I managed to achieve the dream: enter the music degree.

I have prolonged the life of my borrowed Flute, I arrange something here and there, but the Flute does not give enough answer anymore, because it is really in very bad condition. The SFUM "Os Amarelos" has no other replacement instrument to lend me, so it is urgent to raise funds to acquire a Flute for me. The instruments that have the best cost benefit are around 3000 € and have features that allow me to improve my performance and guarantee its longevity.

I never had a personal instrument and unfortunately I do not have the possibility to bear these costs, so I ask for your help to be able to acquire my first instrument and continue my musical studies.

Rui Caeiro since he was 8 years old, who studies music and belongs to the SFUM “Os Amarelos”. At the age of 9, he joined the Regional Conservatory of Baixo Alentejo in the Transverse Flute class of teacher Elsa Marques. However, over the years, he attended several courses for instrumentalists at CRBA. At the age of 12 he performed solo with the SFUM “Os Amarelos”. In 2018, he joined the University of Évora in the Music Course in the Transverse Flute class of teacher Monika Streitová, currently in the 2nd year of Licenciatura. He has already attended several Masterclasses of musicians and flute teachers, such as: István Matuz; Jorge Caryevschi; Christian Studler; Jorge Correia; Katherine Radown; Francisco Barbosa; Ana Ferraz, Luís Garcia; Salomé Matias, Rute Gomes and Ana Sofia. He has already had the opportunity to collaborate with the conductors: Jean-Sébastien Béreau; Yan Mikirtumov; Paulo Martins; António Menino; Carlos Marques and Carlos Amarelinho. In 2018, he was Professor of the Internship at SFUM “Os Amarelos”. In 2018 he participated as a performer in the lecture “From Philharmonic Musician to Professional Musician”, which featured the following speakers: Profª Ema Pires (Department of Anthropology at the University of Évora); Profº Joaquim Simões (Regional Conservatory of Baixo Alentejo) and Profª Lúcia Duarte (Academia de Música de Loulé) In 2019 he participated as a performer in the lecture "The teaching of musical instruments in groups, and his contribution to the development of the child" from which he contacted Professor Maria Milheiro (Director of the Master in Music Teaching at the University of Minho) and Professor António César (Professor at the Regional Conservatory of Baixo Alentejo) Currently, he is part of the team of Professors of the School of Music of SFU M “Os Amarelos” and is conductor of the Youth Band of the same institution.

Budget and due dates

As a rule, a Transverse Flute, like many other instruments, is a highly valuable instrument. Sometimes the price of a new professional instrument can reach and even exceed € 10,000.

• € 2927.49 - (Transverse Flute)
• € 297.51 - (5% + VAT) + Commission (2% + VAT) collection of PPL fees

Total: € 3225

Taking into account the proximity of the 6th semester of my degree and since I will have to present my final recital, I would like to get support until the end of January, in order to be able to adapt to the new flute and work on the new repertoire.
