A bilingual book on the evolution of Portuguese marginal landscapes, published by the Landscape Museum, with photography by Duarte Belo and text by Henrique Pereira dos Santos

For those who want to better understand how it is possible that fires such as those in Pedrógão or October 2017 can exist in Portugal, this book can be useful.

It is a book about marginal landscapes, that is, the poorest landscapes and territories in Portugal, which correspond to a large part of Portugal, between a third to half of the country, depending on the criteria we use to classify them.

During the last centuries, these territories were a source of fertility that allowed to go on producing the bread that kept people alive.

Not because these lands produced bread, on the contrary, they were lands with generally very poor soils, with very low production capacity.

The main social value of these lands was directly related to the need to guarantee the maintenance of the fertility of agricultural fields.

Árvore

There were lands covered by thousands of goats and sheep, here and there also by cows that, in an alliance with the shepherds' fires, allowed the cattle to collect nutrients accumulated in the plant tissues, which the cattle transported close to the agricultural fields, in the form of manure.

With the widespread use of industrial fertilizers, and also with the abandonment of agriculture and the change in fuels used for cooking and heating, these lands are no longer of immediate social use, and their management is abandoned.

The aim of this campaign is to raise 5500 euros (including commissions from the crowdfunding platform) for the publication of a bilingual book about these landscapes, either in a text that aims to help us understand the evolutionary processes that are taking place, or through photographs that allow us to have a more immediate idea of its characteristics and diversity.

The 5500 euros refer to part of the publication costs of the book, which will have a second source of funds at the Landscape Museum to guarantee the overall value.

Recognizing the scarcity of non-tourist documentation on Portuguese landscapes in English, and taking advantage of the universal language of Duarte Belo's photography, it was decided to appeal to collective funding that will allow the dissemination of knowledge about the Portuguese landscape outside Portugal, or for communities residing in Portugal with greater difficulties in reading texts in Portuguese.

If you are interested in the subject, if you like landscape photography and if you think it is worthwhile for those who do not know Portuguese to have the means to get to know the country, join us and contribute to this campaign.

About the author

The Landscape Museum (Landscape Museum ) is the promoter of the campaign and publisher of the book.

The Landscape Museum (MdP) is a digitally based museum dedicated to landscape. It arises in the context of awareness and education for a landscape citizenship that, like the landscape itself, must result from a continuous and collective process.

The MdP has its headquarters online and can be visited at www.museudapaisagem.pt. In this museum, visitors are expected to have contact with reality, to cross the landscape, feel it, explore it and inhabit it. The contents that can be found there will always be complementary to your visit. It is not intended to provide only a set of facts and technical information to support visits, but also to be a mediator, to accompany the visitor along a route, a journey, in which experiences, sensations, thoughts, readings and interpretations of the landscape are shared. .

The Publishing Museum of Landscape (MdP) is dedicated to the themes of Portuguese landscape, territory and space. MdP's editorial plan seeks to bring different perspectives and reflections on the landscape that contribute to the formation of new audiences, new readers and new landscape visitors. Its catalog proposes a wide range of approaches, from travel guides, essays, photo albums, catalogues, fiction, artistic projects, scientific dissemination and illustrated albums. Landscape is the common element to all works.

Rebanho

The Landscape Museum’s editorial plan began in March 2019, starting with the launch of a travel and reading guide to landscapes in the Tejo Territory (Portuguese Tagus watershed) and a landscape exploration manual for younger readers, entitled "What's in this place?" In March 2020, it starts a more regular schedule, with the publication of a trilogy of trips through Portuguese territory. “Caminhar Oblíquo”, by Duarte Belo, is the first edited work of this trilogy, which tells us, through text and photography, a solitary walk of 530 km along the mountainous line between Penedo Durão and Cabo da Roca.

After this first book, other books by Duarte Belo, Suzanne Daveau, Álvaro Domingues, among others, have already been published.

Duarte Belo is an architect by training but his professional activity is based on landscape photography, having one of the largest archives of georeferenced landscape photography in the country.

Henrique Pereira dos Santos is a landscape architect, with research on the evolution of the Portuguese rural landscape.

The common interest in landscape brought these two authors and the Landscape Museum together in this edition, and the idea of a bilingual edition results from the finding of a lack of texts in English for non-tourist dissemination of Portugal's landscapes, an option for which we did not the resources available from the publisher Museum of Landscape are sufficient.

Budget and due dates

2500 euros, of which about 900 euros are for the translation of the text and the rest for the payment of the extra cost resulting from the fact that the text doubles in size, when making a bilingual edition.

The remaining 2500 euros (to which the PPL commission is added) corresponds to the amount that the Landscape Museum has difficulty in mobilizing for a publication whose final cost will be around 8 thousand euros, given the demand for paper quality and printing that does justice to to photography.

The campaign will run for the 30 days of June, with the book being published in September/October.

During this month, there would be two presentations of the book to increase direct contact with potential donors.

    Boa tarde,
