«My heart was born different» helps children and adults to talk about child surgery, in an open, calm and positive way. Accepting the process and managing emotions are fundamental steps for living through this challenge in a healthy manner.
The story of this story begian in 2013, when a mother realized the need to prepare her two-year-old son for a heart surgery. Because he had no symptoms, the child did was not aware of being sick and this mother was lead by intuition.
Three years later, a second surgery came to demand more answers and emotional tools to deal with the experience of pain.
The texts and illustrations that emerged from these two moments allowed the child and his family to understand and accept the process.
What happened out of maternal instinct (or urgency) turned out to be ultimately based on scientific literature: when it comes to child surgery, psychological preparation helps to reduce the inherent anxiety to the process and benefits recovery.
My heart was born different was "written" by the five-year-old child who has just undergone a surgical experience. It reaches a hand to all children who must face such a challenge. It is meant to help to overcoming fears, while it demystifies the procedures and medical exams associated with the surgical process.
