What if we could experience the world through the eyes of others? In this show, dance breaks down barriers and transports the audience to living stories, where each gesture is a bridge between emotions, bodies and realities. More than watching, feeling.
Translúcido is a dance show that brings together Portuguese and Spanish dancers.
This show illustrates the complexity of empathic competence by showing what happens at a neurological, emotional and behavioral level. The show is divided into parts that allow the audience to feel and understand how they can be empathetic.
Furthermore, art is the best way to develop empathy. Therefore, by watching this show you are training empathy.
But art in Portugal needs support, as we all know. In order to continue promoting empathy, taking the show to other stages, we need support for the acquisition of props, rehearsal spaces and travel.
Inspiration
Inspired by the "dance your PhD" competition, we set out to explain the complex concepts of empathy through interpretive dance. And if the principle behind "dance your PhD" is that "if you are willing to defend an obscure and crazy research topic to which you have dedicated your life, then there is probably something in you that wants to dance", we assume that if you are willing to dance, to challenge your body and give it movement and life, then there is probably something in you that wants to learn more about abstract and complex psychological concepts. It was in this relationship that we built our proposal that aims to generate a sensory experience and provoke social reflections.
Methodology
The project combines psychological intervention with the arts. Translating a psychological concept into dance is a powerful tool for social impact and awareness-raising. Unlike traditional dance projects that focus on technique and performance, this project focuses on developing participants’ emotional and social skills.
Why?
Because science shows that art makes us more empathetic.
- Researchers at the University of Vienna have analyzed the impact of contemporary art exhibitions, finding that art makes us more aware and empathetic people and can change our reactions to social challenges such as climate change or refugees.
- Harvard University has an art observation-based course for medical students to develop observation and humanization skills. Art, poetry, narrative essays, music, and theater promote and motivate compassion and empathy in medicine (Brainard and Brislen, 2007 ; Schaff et al., 2011 ; Shapiro, 2002 ).
- Moura, G. (2016) proved that dance can increase empathy through observation and imitation of movements.
