In July, 11 volunteers are going to the Holy Land to bring joy to a summer camp, assist at the Magdala Sanctuary, translate the new missals of the Holy Places, and collaborate at the "Terra Sancta Museum." Help us make this volunteer program possible!
The Christian presence in the Holy Land is at risk of disappearing! Christians, who make up less than 2% of the total population, face discrimination in employment, education, and even in their own neighbourhoods, which often leads them to conceal their faith. For many of these Christians, emigration is seen as the ultimate solution.
The Portuguese Lieutenancy of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem implemented a volunteer program in 2017 aimed at helping the people of the Holy Land.
This year, the group will consist of 11 volunteers and will serve in the following missions:
- Mission "Summer camp at the Monastery of Our Lady of Palestine in Deir Rafat"
There is a great need for summer programs that cater to impoverished areas or conflict zones. The goal is to provide young people and children with educational and recreational activities that foster a sense of trust, respect, understanding, and empathy towards others. Two Portuguese volunteers will support the local religious community in meal preparation and distribution, cleaning, as well as group activities.
- Mission "Magdala"
In recent years, Magdala has become a significant pilgrimage centre and a unique place in the Holy Land, actively contributing to building positive relations between Jews and Christians. The four Portuguese volunteers who will be going to Magdala will be responsible for assisting pilgrims, providing liturgical support, and maintaining the buildings and grounds.
- Mission "Jerusalem"
The Custody of the Holy Land is one of the provinces of the Franciscan Order, which has the special mission of being the "guardians" of the stones and places where Jesus lived. They also have the mission of sharing the blessings of each Holy Place with the local Christian communities and pilgrims from around the world. Three Portuguese volunteers will support the friars in translating and editing the new Missals for each Holy Place and the "Terra Sancta Museum" project.
We seek your support to cover the costs of food, health insurance, and travel expenses in the Holy Land. Help us make this project possible!
