€20 for the memory of a poet: A group of citizens is organizing a crowdfunding campaign to place totems with poems by Pedro da Silveira in all the islands of the Azores, as part of the poet's centenary celebration.
The Instituto Açoriano de Cultura, publisher of Pedro da Silveira, and the Arquipélago de Escritores, an annual literary event created in 2018, are promoting this fundraising campaign for the installation, in all the islands of the Azores, of a totem celebrating the poet from Flores island, on the occasion of the centenary of his birth. Each totem reproduces a poem by Pedro da Silveira alluding to the place where it will stand, in portuguese, followed by its English translation. The poem's are based on the choice of Urbano Bettencourt, responsible for editing the poetic work, entitled Fui ao Mar Buscar Laranjas.
The installation will take place on a date close to the Day of the Azores, and the campaign, which started today, ends on the 25th of May.
This initiative complements others, with public, governmental or municipal funding. It is intended, this time, that readers, booksellers and librarians contribute individually so that the memory of this Azorean writer is present in every corner of our archipelago.

There are several contributions availabrla. From 20 € (twenty euros) up, each supporter will receive a copy of a book containing this selection of poems and its translation.
The list of supporters will be released through the Instituto Açoriano de Cultura, as well as photographs of all the totems produced.
May each subscriber be himself a promoter of this initiative, inviting friends and acquaintances to contribute to this Azorean tribute to one of its greatest writers of the 20th century.
About the author
Founded in 1955, the Instituto Açoriano de Cultura (IAC) is a non-profit, public utility cultural association. Which, from the very beginning, set goals that are still relevant today: to bring together cultural agents dispersed in the Azores and lead them to think and cultivate informed opinions; to create the awareness of regional unity in the Azores; reflect on the social and economic progress of the Azores and project them, with a view to the development of the archipelago as a whole. In the 1960s, IAC carried out a series of Study Weeks that sought to reflect on this issues.
The Institute has an archipelagic vision, which has been translated, at an editorial level, with the publication of the prestigious magazine “Atlantida” and a vast set of reference works of regional and national culture, covering areas of essay, science, arts and literature; as well as the SMOG poetry festival, seminars and colloquiums, eitheir related to memory and heritage, or related with the questioning of the present issues; complemented by a vast exhibition activity, bringing the biggest names in contemporary art to the Azores, and also promoting the work and creativity of different Azorean artists. The IAC operates in a permanent dialogue between transdisciplinary expressions and creations.
The Arquipelago de Escritores (Writers' Archipelago) is an encounter that celebrates the Azorean literary tradition and the Azores as a crossroads for different cultures and literatures. It promotes conversations and meetings between guest authors and readers, sessions at schools, music concerts, residencies, staged readings, performances and film sessions - Words and books are the starting point to talk about life. AE promotes cultural conviviality, the exchange of ideas and the taste for reading.
