We want to give our 43 kids that come from a disadvantage background the opportunity to broaden their horizons and to participate in different activities during their Christmas break.
The project O Meu Lugar No Mundo (My Place in the World) started in 2014 with the goal of giving every child equal rights, opportunities and access to education, no matter their social and economic power.
We work to break vicious cycles of social exclusion, with a preventive approach that gives kids and teens that come from disadvantage backgrounds the tools to build a positive life path. We do it by using an innovative pedagogy that stimulates critical thinking, respect for everyone and the development of caring interpersonal relationships.
Today, we work with 43 kids and teens (6-16 years old) and their 103 family members. We count with the support of our amazing and hardworking volunteer team. We put our hearts in our daily work for this cause. We have no funding and many challenges, so it is our relentless work and strong belief in what we do that takes us further.
We have a place (our little headquarter), where we fit all the hopes and expectations of a better world. This is where we want everyone to find their place in the world, where we want everyone to be happy.
We have a dedicated team of 41 volunteers, that guide and work with our kids daily after school and every day during the school breaks. We give psycho-pedagogic support, we do different activities that develop soft skills – Drawing Classes, Dance, Sports, IT, Computer Programming – we have different programs – Sexual Education, Human Rights Education, Financial Literacy, Environmental Education – and we also provide family follow-up and work with the aim of preventing risk behavior.
In the school year of 2016/2017, having always in mind the development of soft skills allied with the requirements of the Portuguese educational system, we achieved one of our biggest victories. In the previous years, 15 of our 53 participants had been retained at school at least once. In 2016/2017 we had 100 % of school approval!
We believe we can do this again and with more kids, but to do so, we need your help. We need people and entities that believe in the construction of a fairer and more inclusive communities.
So we ask you, to help us have a Christmas break full of joy and activities that will give our kids the chance to explore the environment around them and to broaden their horizons. Help us make their little world bigger!
Can we count on you?
