Welcome to our Uniraid 2025 adventure.

The adventure began when Tiago decided to ask João if he wanted to take part in a desert race for a week. Little did Tiago know that João has few demands in life, but a decent bathroom and a mattress to sleep on are at the top of his list. This conversation took place at a lunch table, when João was still on crutches (that sales pitch for the weak). Tiago showed some videos of previous editions. So what is UNIRAID?

Uniraid is a solidarity, entrepreneurial journey with a strong community and mutual aid component across the sands of Morocco and Dakar. The car must be over 15 years old and cannot be a 4x4. It is a 2400 km journey, spread over 6 days, with navigation using (ONLY) a roadbook and compass and we hope to arrive with the car (not on a trailer) to deliver solidarity material to several remote communities.
It involves preparing the car for this tough adventure, and finding support and sponsorship in our community for expenses, registration and 40kgs of solidarity material.

Being also a super/mega/hyper fan of driving, and of doing miles, despite the implicit situation of desert and tents, the proposal pleased me, and before dessert the decision was practically made. After a few days came that pleasant thing to hear/read "let's go". And so began this long and complex journey.

About the author

The promoters are Tiago Afonso and João Pinela, one from the Algarve and the other from the Alentejo (the latter more accustomed to plains with a more arid landscape (or with olive trees)) who have known each other for 10 years.

João is a 43-year-old database consultant who enjoys the planning, marketing and organisational aspects of a project like this, but he hates the multiple small steps involved. But it has to be done. His favourite things to bring are educational items and toys.

Tiago is a 37-year-old telecommunications engineer who likes to get his hands dirty in scenes and things, and take them apart and put them back together and look for pieces here and there and beyond (in a workshop or a house under construction, he wouldn't embarrass anyone). So he basically won an XXL-sized Lego set for adults. His favorite materials are medicine and food.

And what Lego for adults did Tiago get? He decided he wanted to take something different, and got himself a 1990 BMW E30, named Alfred (given its distinctive appearance and polished look (before the preparation for UNIRAID and hopefully after it)).

They both love cars and driving, and they thought it was a very interesting initiative, the adventure of driving resulting in supporting communities in need.

We did not include the value of the car in this budget, as it (we hope) will continue to exist after the race :)

In terms of scheduling:

  • August - Promotional material (tshirts, Instagram, presentation videos, website)
  • September - General review at Alfred's workshop, start of promotion among family and friends, and generation of content for engagement. Tests on land.
  • October - Contacts have already begun with companies to support expenses and solidarity materials. Contacts continue.
  • November - Car promotion in high-traffic areas in the Lisbon area
  • January - Car fully prepared, tested on sand, for the trip.
  • February - Travel :)
