ASA – a collective flight to support breastfeeding

A solid project, with proven impact, that needs funding to continue making a difference in providing differentiated support for breastfeeding in Portugal.

A solid project, with proven impact, that needs funding to continue making a difference in providing differentiated support for breastfeeding in Portugal.

ASA - In Service to Breastfeeding is a solidarity project, created by volunteers with training in breastfeeding and experience in assisting families, who intend to dedicate some of their time to supporting, free of charge and in person, women who breastfeed or intend to breastfeed.

All support is provided or supervised by IBCLC (IBLCE certified lactation consultants) with a multidisciplinary team.

An initiative for those who want professional help, but do not have the financial means and/or access to the support that we all deserve.

«At ASA, families will find the comfort of a mother's wing, while at the same time receiving tools to fly alone.»

As:

Every month, ASA volunteers meet with families at a location to be announced (which is expected to be rotating), providing individual breastfeeding sessions in appropriate conditions of privacy. A workshop for pregnant women is also held throughout the day, designed to prepare for the future breastfeeding experience.

Destination of our flight:

We hope that ASA can continue to do more and better than it has done in the last 3 years. We will migrate to several locations, building nests that welcome different communities, in partnership with local entities that identify with the project and wish to contribute to the promotion of breastfeeding among their populations.

Although the number of professionals capable of providing breastfeeding support has increased in recent years, many families still do not have access to specialized breastfeeding support in primary health care. This lack of adequate and timely support often leads to the end of breastfeeding.

Women who face challenges, whether they are pain, difficulties in adapting the baby to the breast or the baby's development differing from what is expected for the age group, are quickly directed to solutions that compromise breastfeeding.

Specialized breastfeeding support, aimed at empowering the mother and without intervention beyond what is strictly necessary, has the potential to establish satisfactory and lasting breastfeeding experiences.

Breastfeeding is a public health issue, and in addition to all the known physical and emotional health benefits, it is now becoming an urgent financial issue for many families who can save up to €900 (source: studies from several countries between 2018-2024). As a society, it is estimated that we can save up to thousands of euros in the costs that the national health system has with mothers who do not breastfeed and children who are not breastfed, in the following years, similar to what Norway includes in its GDP.

ASA – Ao Serviço da Amamentação , aims to be another resource for families to access, but to continue on the ground we need your contribution, whether financial to cover expenses & operational costs, or by sharing the campaign with your network who can also be part of this pioneering initiative.

Our WINGS take us further! Will you come with us?!
