World Cancer Day Campaign - Fundraising campaign for the Portuguese League Against Cancer
On February 4th, World Cancer Day is celebrated. World Cancer Day (WCD) is an initiative of the International Cancer Control Union (UICC), of which the Portuguese League Against Cancer (LPCC) is a member. This day aims to empower and unite the population to face one of the biggest health challenges public. Raising awareness, improving education and promoting personal and collective action in the fight against cancer are the focus of the DMC.
Conscious and determined actions, namely in the area of prevention, will prevent millions of deaths from cancer . There is an urgent need to spread the message and provide equal access to treatment and health care.
This year, on World Cancer Day (February 4th), the motto is to fight “For Fairer Care”, raising awareness of inequality in access to diagnosis, screening and treatment. In this sense, in partnership with the UICC, the LPCC launched the “5 Km Challenge”, with the objective of promoting the practice of physical activity so that, together, we can “go around the world, to go around cancer”. .
About the author
Founded on November 3 of 1887, the Associação Académica de Coimbra (AAC) has always been a unique institution in the reality of student associations in Portugal and in the defense of academicism in Coimbra. The contours of the preludes of its existence, immediately show the irreverent mobilization and the eagerness of its leaders to build projects and links between all the students of the University, namely with the first president of the Association, António Luís Gomes (1887-1890 ), in president of the Teatro Académico (1885), to join with 17 other academics in order to carry out a reform in what was then called the Dramatic Academy and to lay the foundations of what would become the Academic Association. The 4 fundamental axes of AAC's intervention are culture, sport, politics and civic and social intervention.
This campaign comes in close collaboration with the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro.
The Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro (LPCC), founded in 1941, is a national reference in supporting cancer patients and their families, promoting health, preventing cancer and encouraging training and research in oncology. The Regional Center of the Centre, headquartered in Coimbra, is one of the institution's five nuclei which, naturally, bases its action on these four fundamental axes.
Budget and due dates
Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro is a non-governmental, non-profit organisation, declared of Public Utility and exempt from IRC, entitled to receive donations from individuals and companies, which, upon receipt issued by the League, will be subject to tax IRS and IRC, respectively.
Not receiving any state subsidies for the development of its activities and programs, the donations granted to the LPCC, especially at the time of the annual collection, are the financial guarantee for the development of primary and secondary cancer prevention activities, support for training and research in oncology and providing social support to cancer patients and their families. They represent a great testament to the generosity of the populations covered by the Liga Portuguesa Contra o Cancro and the great appreciation for the work carried out on behalf of the population in general and cancer patients in particular.
