Bionics and Design Book. a work dedicated to the Italian designer Carmelo Di Bartolo (created the CRIED Research Center in the 1980s). Its content is a historical-scientific narrative through the testimony of 30 protagonists.
Motivation
Time is quarantined. But it is also a time of culture. In January of this year at the headquarters of the Centro Ricerche IED in Milan, we had the presentation of the magnificent book made collectively, dedicated to the teacher, designer and conductor Carmelo Di Bartolo . The book entitled: Bionics and Design , is becoming a landmark in your field of knowledge. We seek to produce a book with hybrid language and narrative. Historical aspects and scientific content. A 400-page work on history, evolution, environmental education and design processes in the field of bionics and natural structure. A book rich in details and scientific content.
Why sell a book by crowdfunding
A few weeks after the book was presented in Milan - Italy, the number of 500 printed copies was exhausted. Believing and confident of success, that hundreds of other professionals, colleagues and onlookers would be interested in the book in Brazil, America and Europe, we immediately made over 400 printed copies.
With the arrival of this virus the world has changed. Labor relations must change, sustainable business models must change, and business rules must undergo considerable and profound adjustments. So we were taken by surprise. Five presentations scheduled to promote and sell the books in Brazil, all canceled. What to do in a dramatic moment like this? Have a printed heritage and not even find a bookstore, university or professional association to publicize and disseminate this production.
our decision was to use a powerful online tool and reach every home, every corner of the world. At this point, quarantine and the pandemic open new doors for distribution channels. We did this crowdfunding, for believing in our project, for believing that the content of this book will be transforming the lives of many people, just as it was in the lives of these 30 protagonists who wrote this book.
About the author
Prof. Amilton Arruda, Designer by UFPE (1982), Master in Design and Bionics by IED in Milan (1992) and Doctorate and Ph.D by Polytechnic of Milan (2003). Post-doctorate UNIDCOM / IADE Lisboa and FEUP / UPorto - Porto in Portugal (2019). He was a consultant for the national SEBRAE in the announcement for the implementation of design centers and centers in the Brazilian states. Since 1985 he is professor at UFPE, associate III, professor at the Postgraduate Program in Design PPGD / UFPE. Coordinator of CNPq's Biodesign and Industrial Artifacts Research Group. Guides master's and doctoral students in the area of Bionics and Biomimetics with an emphasis on Design; Strategic Design acting mainly on the following themes: Technological Innovation, Design Management and Design Processes. Organizer of three books in the design, culture and technology series using the OpenAccess platform by Edgard Blucher | 2016 design and complexity | 2017 design and social innovation | 2018 design, artifacts and sustainable systems | 2020 Narratives and Languages in the creative process in Modeling and Prototyping (in press). Always with Edgar Blucher he organizes the series [designNATUREZA] essays on design, bionics and biomimetics with the following books | 2018 Methods and Processes in Bionics and Biomimetics: the technological revolution by nature. | 2019 Bionics and Design. Carmelo Di Bartolo and Il Centro Ricerche IED: esperienze memorabile da 30 protagonisti. With the publisher Insigh in (2019) we launched the following title: Topics in Design: Biomimetics, Sustainability and New Materials.
