Repatris wants to "Free the Aqueduct" from small illegal walls, gates and buildings that have been occupying its surroundings. Through demolition works, we want to restore this National Monument's legality, which will allow the citizens' enjoyment.
Santa Clara Aqueduct was built in the seventeenth century, and it brought water from Terroso to the Santa Clara's convent. Classified as a National Monument, it has originally a protection zone of 50 mtrs and a free area in its surroundings with 5 mtrs on each side. Nevertheless, during the last decades, some neighbors have been ilegally occupying this same free area, with small walls, gates and buildings that have been preventing the access to aqueduct's structure. Such actions imply a growing difficulty in its conservation, which leads to the consequent degradation, besides not allowing the enjoyment of citizens.
Repatris' mission is to free the aqueduct, by the principles seted in International Charter For The Conservation And Restoration Of Monuments And Sites, 1964. Our action will prevent the aqueduct's future degradation, and this is only the first step of a big and extensive project focused on safeguarding of this architectural heritage.
