ANDAIME is a cultural festival that brings together several events at the 1º de Maio Shopping Center in Viana do Castelo.

ANDAIME DE MAIO is free and universal cultural and artistic project, that aims to explore and articulate the needs of the Viana community in a dynamic of artistic cooperation. It aims to support the cultural development of the city of Viana do Castelo from a perspective of inclusion, aiming to create a transitory space open to the community. In this sense, it focuses on the creation of a collaborative network, made up of elements from the various social strata of the city and various artists of national and international scope, with the aim of nurturing and generating continuous opportunities for dialogue between the community and the creators.

The project materializes in a cultural agenda that revolves around a quarterly artistic residency, based in the 1º de Maio Shopping Center . The program also includes specific events such as concerts, performances, workshops, talks and exhibitions, which will take place in conjunction with the period of the artist residency. It is intended that in all proposed activities there is an active participation of the community, referring schools, institutions, associations, companies and the general public.

ANDAIME is built upon 3 bases, 3 main objectives :

space: creation of a transitional creative space, for and through the community, giving life to a place that is forgotten and weakened;

city: genesis of new audiences and new ways of experiencing the city, transforming it a relevant place in the national artistic circuit;

community: strengthening ties between the community and the city through culture, empowering citizens to act;

Space

The collective memory of a once effervescent space like the 1º de Maio shopping center and the need to give it a new atmosphere was the motto that started this project. After more than a decade of its decadence carried out by various economic factors, the space remains intact, with less and less activity. In addition to the reduced commercial activity, the exploitation of cinema by the Associação AONORTE and the café on the first floor, the “non-place” is used merely as a crossing point between Rua do Teatro Sá de Miranda and the outdoor patio of the center.,which leads to various points of the city center.

City

Unlike other cultural centers in the north, the city of Viana do Castelo has not yet managed to establish audiences that extend beyond its horizons. With this project, through the strategic selection of (inter)national creators, we aim to build new audiences for the city and people who can also revolutionize the way the city is experienced. Reconnecting the city to the national artistic scene.

Community

There are several cultural efforts that have been taking place in the city over the years, there is a rich program and infrastructure to receive it, however, we see that this program does not reach everyone.

One of the slogans that describes this city is “Viana is love” and whoever “likes comes, whoever loves stays”. In this project, the question arises: who are the people who stay, and who are the ones who end up moving to other areas?

About the author

As young adults, originally from Viana do Castelo and with a background in the arts, we feel a general disconnection with the city's culture, partly due to the lack of offering a broader spectrum of artistic and cultural activities. This opinion was still manifested in our adolescence and continues to this day. Now that we have moved away to other parts of the country, we feel a disunity with our origin - the place that was our childhood and adolescence. We believe that Viana do Castelo went beyond the "Festas da Agonia", Natário's Berliner Balls and Santoinho's festivities. It was, above all, a space, an atmosphere with which we learned to grow and to dialogue with life . As such, we believe it is essential to boost cultural interest in the city, in order to involve and enrich the entire community, joining it.
Gil Monteverde has a degree in Multimedia from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto. He attended the Faculty of Hochschule Fur Bildend Kunst Dresden and the Introduction to Interpreting Course at the Teatro Universitário do Porto. From his experience with the creation and production of events, “VAGA” (2020) , “Olivai-nos do Mal” (2020), Dezenrascar-te” (2015) stands out. He regularly participates in exhibitions in Portugal and abroad. Interned at ZKM|Karlsruhe. He designed for “Lethtes em Bruto”, “AN-TRE”, “CROSS CULTURAL COLABORATION”, “.lab”, wendy.network” and “KONJUGATE”. He is also creative director and designer on the “Jaskyna” project.
Júlia Miranda Double bassist and double bass teacher, she studied at the Professional Music School in Viana do Castelo and at the Higher School of Applied Arts in Castelo Branco.
He completed the Degree in Music - Instrument Variant (Contrabass) and the Master's in Music Teaching - Instrument Variant and Ensemble Class at ESART, having recently published his master's thesis entitled Creativity in Music Teaching: Development Strategies of creativity in bass lessons.
Rafaela Fernandes Self-styled plastic artist, who lives between Porto and Viana do Castelo. In 2020 he graduated from the Visual Arts course at FBAUP. Her practice is multidisciplinary and encompasses sculpture, painting, photography and video. Sculpture emerges as the first working language, where it materializes unknown, immaterializable bodies. He uses paraffin as the predominant material and with this he explores ephemerality. In his painting, color works as a certainty, becoming the language in which he finds the greatest value of affirmation and decision.

Budget and due dates

ANDAIME has the support of the Municipality of Viana do Castelo and DGARTES, however this crowdfunding arises from the need to give greater support to artists, creating a basis of sustainable trust. Your contribution will help cover the following costs:

1 Fees from various artists

2 Production expenses (sound and lighting)

3 Travel expenses

4 Accommodation for occasional artists

5 Meals for occasional artists

Scaffolding starts on May 14th and during the 3 months of residency, we will have 3 weekends with concerts, performances, conversations and exhibitions with national and international artists. These will be May 14th, June 10th to 12th and lastly from July 29th to 30th.

Any help is welcome when building something from scratch.
