Academic Short Film | A boy believes he can delay what he neither understands nor controls: his sister's illness.

SYNOPSIS

José, a nine-year-old boy, believes that children who lose their hair will die. When he discovers that his older sister, recently diagnosed with cancer, has to shave her head, José is forced to confront his belief and understand the impact the disease has on his favorite person.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Seja o que Eu quiser is a short film made as part of the final project for a Master's degree in Cinema and Photography – Specialization in Fiction Film, at the School of Media Arts and Design (ESMAD). The narrative explores the impact of cancer on family relationships, all through the perspective of a child. In the film, a young protagonist tries to navigate what it means to have a sibling shave their head. Although it falls within the fiction genre, the film is inspired by real events in the director's life, which gives it an intimate character and a strong emotional charge.

About the author

The Seja o que Eu quiser team is made up of students (and friends) from ESMAD, resulting in a team of passionate and professional filmmakers. This short film is the Master's Final Project of Luís Miguel Rocha (screenwriter and director), Matias Pires (Director of Photography), Erik Ittermann (Art Director) and Francisco Sousa (Sound Director).

Luís Miguel Rocha holds a Master's degree in Cinema and Photography - Specialization in Fiction, from ESMAD, and graduated in Cinema from the University of Beira Interior in 2021. During his academic career, he directed the short documentary film À Luz das Impressões , developed the experimental project DOTS MADNESS , and participated in the short fiction film Não Sei o Que Fazer com as Mãos as co-writer and assistant director. All of these works were screened at various film festivals and exhibitions in Portugal. In the first year of his Master's program, he consolidated his knowledge and experience in the areas of editing and assistant directing through the short film Uma Pessoa Assim . Currently, through the project Seja o que Eu quiser, he intends to dedicate himself to the areas of screenwriting and directing. Human drama and the relationships established between complex characters have been areas of greatest interest.
