The book is an autobiography written by Rui Osório, 78 years old, who is insolvent and has post-traumatic stress disorder. It recounts his life experiences from childhood to old age. The work is divided into several chapters that address different aspects of his life.
The first chapters provide information about Rui's family and childhood. He was born in 1947 in the city of Porto, Portugal, into a middle-class bourgeois family with a long genealogical history. His childhood was marked by a rigid and formal family environment, with a distant father and a domineering mother and aunt who imposed a regime of surveillance and abuse. Rui experienced trauma and confusion in his childhood, struggling against the contradictions and ethical conflicts he observed in the adult world.
The autobiography follows Rui during his school years, describing his journey through primary and secondary education (Liceu D. Manuel II). During this period, Rui developed an interest in hobbies such as model trains, construction kits, and drawing, which provided him with a refuge from the formality and hostility of his family environment. He also became involved in the social life of his community, participating in events such as the São João festival and Carnival celebrations.
In 1969, Rui was drafted into the Portuguese army and sent to serve in the colonial war in Guinea-Bissau. His experiences during this period, including the trauma of a tragic accident that killed several of his comrades, are recounted in detail. After returning from the war, Rui struggled to reintegrate into civilian life, facing various phobias and difficulties.
The autobiography then recounts Rui's subsequent professional and personal experiences, including his work in the IT field, his marriage and divorce, and his later involvement in volunteer work in Africa. Throughout the narrative, Rui reflects on the challenges he faced, the lessons he learned, and the unique perspectives he gained from his diverse life experiences.
The unique and interesting insight this document reveals is the richness and complexity of Rui's life story, encompassing a vast range of experiences—from the trauma and abuse of his childhood, through the horrors of war, to the highs and lows of his professional and personal life. Rui's memoirs offer a deeply personal and introspective account of an individual who faced the challenges and contradictions of the 20th century, providing a unique perspective on the social, political, and cultural changes that shaped his life and the world around him.
