The project redevelops the outdoor spaces of ESALV after Storm Kristin, with wooden exercise equipment, shaded areas and leisure facilities, promoting inclusion and healthy habits. The project is refurbishing ESALV’s outdoor spaces following Storm Kristin, with wooden exercise equipment, shaded areas and leisure zones, promoting inclusion and healthy habits.
Following Storm Kristin, which caused large trees to fall and damaged the sports hall, the outdoor spaces of Afonso Lopes Vieira Secondary School became more exposed, less comfortable, and with reduced use. In response to this situation, the project proposes the requalification of these spaces through the installation of wooden exercise equipment along the ecotrail (bars, balance structures, and functional training equipment), small rest areas along the track (benches), and the creation of shaded areas with pergolas, tables, and benches next to the playing field. Information panels to support the use of the equipment will also be installed. The intervention aims to restore functionality, safety, and attractiveness to the school's outdoor space.

About the author
Afonso Lopes Vieira Secondary School is an educational institution that stands out for its strong cultural diversity and commitment to inclusion. Its educational community comprises approximately 1100 students from different ethnic backgrounds and socio-cultural contexts, promoting a daily environment of sharing, respect, and intercultural learning.
The school presents itself as an inclusive space, with a multi-disability unit that supports students with specific needs, guaranteeing equal opportunities and full participation in school life. This service reinforces the school's role as an active agent in promoting equity and social integration. Following Storm Kristin, the school saw its outdoor infrastructure significantly affected, with the destruction of large trees that provided shade and comfort, as well as damage to the sports hall, limiting the practice of Physical Education.
This situation compromises the quality of spaces intended for socializing, leisure, and physical activity, making their requalification urgent in order to restore adequate, safe, and inclusive conditions for the entire school community.
Objectives
The overall goal is to promote regular physical activity and the well-being of the entire school community. Specific objectives include encouraging healthy lifestyles, diversifying opportunities for sports practice, increasing student participation in outdoor activities, improving physical education class conditions, and creating more comfortable and safe outdoor spaces. In parallel, the project seeks to strengthen inclusion by ensuring accessibility for students with multiple disabilities, increasing shaded areas, and promoting healthy interaction between students from different cultures, stimulating social skills, autonomy, and cooperation.
Target Audience
The project is aimed at the entire educational community, including students, teachers, and non-teaching staff.
Expected Impact
The project is expected to contribute to increased physical activity, improved physical and emotional well-being of students, and enhanced value for the school environment. The creation of shaded and rest areas will allow for safer and more comfortable breaks, reducing sun exposure and promoting greater autonomy, especially for students with reduced mobility. The new equipment will encourage more active and healthy lifestyles, while the communal spaces will reinforce inclusion, social interaction, and a sense of belonging. Overall, the project will transform the eco-trail and outdoor spaces into a more accessible, welcoming environment that fosters the holistic development of all students.
