Campaign to support the Sociedade Filarmónica Amizade Visconde de Alcácer in recovering from the 2026 floods, preserving its cultural heritage and ensuring the continuity of the free activities it offers to the community.

In early 2026, significant flooding occurred on the Sado River, resulting from intense rainfall and a sudden increase in flow. The facilities of the Sociedade Filarmónica Amizade Visconde de Alcácer, located in a vulnerable area, were directly affected. The water flooded the ground floor—where three rented shops operate—and worsened the deterioration of the adjacent building used for rehearsals and small events.

The damage compromises the normal functioning of the institution and jeopardizes the continuity of its cultural and educational activities. The impacts recorded include water infiltration in rehearsal rooms and technical areas, destruction of floors, walls and ceilings, damage to electrical equipment, instruments and furniture, loss of teaching materials and deterioration of air conditioning systems. Structural interventions are necessary to prevent future damage.

The Philharmonic Society, with almost 200 years of history, is a cultural landmark of the municipality. It maintains a free Music School, organizes events that bring the population closer to culture, trains successive generations of young people, and represents Alcácer do Sal in regional and national performances. For many inhabitants, it is one of the few means of access to culture.

The restoration of the facilities therefore constitutes an essential investment in the cultural identity of the municipality. The project aims to repair the flood damage, modernize and make the building more resilient, protect the musical heritage, guarantee dignified conditions for free training, reinforce the safety of all users, renovate the rented shops and upgrade the adjacent building, transforming it into a suitable space for rehearsals and community events.

About the author

In 1830, the town of Alcácer do Sal had a brass band called "Sete Estrelas" (Seven Stars), dedicated to enlivening festivals and popular events. At a time when music was gaining importance in public life, this group marked the beginning of the popularity of philharmonic orchestras. Driven by the cultural environment and his political activity, the Viscount of Alcácer joined the "Sete Estrelas" group and, on July 11, 1830, founded his Philharmonic Society, acquiring instruments and creating music lessons. Shortly after, the new band became one of the most prestigious in the region, a source of pride for the population.

On March 15, 1842, in response to the growth of philharmonic societies, the Viscount endowed the institution with its first Statutes, defining it as a space for Popular Culture and Recreation, open to the entire community. Around 1860, after the reconciliation of internal groups, it came to be called the Friendship Philharmonic Society.

In 1880, a fire destroyed the headquarters, but the Viscount once again supported the organization, installing it in his "Pedro Nunes Club," a building that remains its current headquarters. During the festivities of July 11th of that year, the institution adopted the name "Sociedade Filarmónica Amizade Visconde de Alcácer" (Viscount of Alcácer Friendship Philharmonic Society), in homage to its founder.

Today, the Society maintains a central role in the cultural life of the municipality, integrating the Philharmonic Band, the free Music School, guitar and piano lessons, the organization of concerts, cultural events, and rehearsal spaces. For many inhabitants, it continues to be one of the main means of access to culture and artistic training in Alcácer do Sal.
