"Get the plastic moving!" intends to transform discarded plastics into a positive impact, giving life to a new product, the skateboard. Through workshops, we will reuse about 2.5kg of discarded plastic for each board produced.
In Portugal, around 40% of plastic waste is still sent to landfills. This proposal intends to "Put plastic on the moving!", transforming it into a positive impact, giving life to a new product, the skateboard. The project aims to develop actions that encourage environmental awareness, dialogue, multiplication of creative learning and access to new experiences.
Through workshops, it is intended to bring the public (especially children and young people) closer to the logic of the Circular Economy, raising awareness for the conscientious use of plastic and recycling. The activities involve accessible language, active participation, collaboration and co-creation, providing, in a fun way, the opportunity to participate in the production process of the pieces, reusing about 2.5 kg of discarded plastic for each board produced.
Since Lisbon is the European capital of sport for 2021, the ultimate goal is to combine the circular economy with the practice of skateboarding, encouraging participants to be more active, while developing team spirit and sharing.
About the author
Collecting is a social business that seeks to catch plastic before it reaches landfills or oceans, using it as raw material for new products, always with a collaborative and inclusive approach, co-creating products and actions that place the people as the key element of the solutions.
Focusing on this incorrect destination and the low level of plastic reuse, since Portugal annually recycles only 41.8%* of this material and the rest is sent to landfills or incineration, our goal is to talk about the misconception about this material , which many tend to dispense with, throwing it away because they consider it garbage and not a raw material. Through its reuse and economic enhancement, the proposal is to reintroduce it in the economy in a circular way, reviewing values and choices.
Our challenge is to change individual decisions thinking about the collective, through practical and participatory actions of community learning, which reuse discarded plastic and attribute economic value to this material.
The project was accelerated by Relança-te - Escola de Impacto Online (Ageas Foundation's program in partnership with Impact Hub Lisbon), which supports sustainable entrepreneurship projects, with social, environmental or economic responsibility and impact objectives adapted to the future world. Currently, the project is accelerated by Shifty Happens, a program that seeks solutions to neglected social and/or environmental challenges at a local or global level and that have an ethical and sustainable approach.
