"If You Don't Know, Ask — a podcast to talk about Setúbal"

Setúbal needs more spaces for free, informed, and pluralistic debate. “If You Don’t Know, Ask” is a new interview podcast, hosted by Paulo Anjos, dedicated to Setúbal.

Setúbal needs more spaces for free, informed, and pluralistic debate. “If You Don’t Know, Ask” is a new interview podcast, hosted by Paulo Anjos, dedicated to Setúbal.

Our goal is simple: to create a space where public decisions are scrutinized, ideas are confronted, and the voice of citizens is taken seriously. We will talk to journalists, academics, association leaders, businesspeople, activists, and, above all, to the people of Setúbal who feel the impact of local policies on a daily basis.

We have a lot to ask.

Setúbal is a land incredibly rich in history and stories that deserve to be told by the protagonists. This is the city of Bocage and José Afonso, of Slow J and Sebastião da Gama, of Vitor Batista and Mourinho. We are a land with a very strong and incomparable identity. Fried cuttlefish was born here, we overuse the "r" sound when we speak, and we don't mind being called "charrocos" (a derogatory term for simpletons). The sea and the mountains profoundly mark us.

Still, there is much we don't know, and that's why we have so many questions.

I want to ask what I don't know, and for that, I count on your support. Help this project grow so that we can have a space in Setúbal for frank and open debate, where we talk about politics, but also go far beyond that. With your contribution, we can strengthen our community and reinforce our Setúbal identity.

Contribute! It's quick and easy.

About the author

My name is Paulo Anjos and I was born in 1966, in what was then called Parque das Escolas and is now Largo José Afonso. I grew up in Largo da Fonte Nova and between Rua Paulino de Oliveira and Rua Vasco da Gama. Rua do Ligeiro was the fast track for my bicycle races and Outeiro was the ski slope where I used to go down with the rest of the lads on wooden planks we found in the streets.

I am and I like being a Setubalense, a charroco, a Sadino from the land of sardines and mackerel.

I began my professional life at 18 at Rádio Azul, where I was a journalist and learned a great deal from two intractable men, but always willing to teach what they knew: journalists Jorge Simões and Luciano Rocha. They were the ones who trained a whole generation of journalists from Setúbal who today stand out in the most important national media outlets. Jorge has passed away, Luciano is still around somewhere. It's always essential to remember them.

Political, partisan, and associative activism has been present in my life since a very young age. It still is today. There's nothing to hide.

Then, I started a family at 22 and became a father at 23 and 27 to Joana and Mariana. Now I only aspire to be a grandfather. Not bad at all...

I tried to finish my degree in journalism, which I started in 1985, even before this great adventure of becoming a father, but I only managed to do so in 2009, after the course had changed its name to Communication Sciences. Better late than never...

I spent the rest of my professional career in the communications departments of local authorities, always closely supporting mayors. In total, I worked with nine mayors, six men and three women: Ferreira da Costa and Carlos Pésinho (Palmela), Gracieta Baião and Rogério de Brito (Alcácer do Sal), João Soares (Lisbon, where I worked directly with Councillor Rita Magrinho, responsible for Sports), Carlos Sousa (Palmela and Setúbal), Maria das Dores Meira and André Martins (Setúbal), and finally, again, Ana Teresa Vicente, in Palmela. I also worked for the Association of Municipalities of the Setúbal Region. I often say that I worked in the smallest municipality in the country, although it was one of the largest in terms of territory, and the largest one at that. I spent seven years at the Alcácer do Sal City Council, from where I went directly to the Lisbon City Council, where I worked for two years in press relations. This is, in fact, the activity that has occupied me the most throughout my entire professional career.

For the past 24 years I worked at the Setúbal City Council, where I headed the Communications Division and provided press relations services for the entire council and all the mayors who served there during that period. I currently work at the Palmela City Council.
