Before being anything else, I'm a black woman. Whenever I wake up in the morning, I have to fight for my existence by imposing it. This is what this show is about.
AS SOON AS I WAKE is a show that analyzes systemic racism in Portugal as a determining factor in the construction of the identity of two black Portuguese women.
The show's based on the artist's biography through a more or less fictional narrative that envolops between the past and present, thus highlighting the particularities of being black in Portugal. These episodes serve as catalysts for the recognition and understanding of this experience.
The audience joins the artists around a large oval table in a conference room, where they attend a presentation open for discussion. AS SOON AS I WAKE happens as a means of denouncing “privileged” information. It is, inevitably, a show with a political character, even though this is not its main motivation.
“Before being anything else, I'm a black woman. Whenever I wake up in the morning, I have to fight for my existence by imposing it. The (non) privilege begins there; this show is about that. ”
(Lara Mesquita, creator of the show)
After some rejected requests for support, we decided to carry out this campaign to finance the project. Your help is crucial to pay for some of the technical needs of the show. By contributing to the realization of this play, you will also be enabling the voices and experiences we intend to transmit to be heard and understood.
"Eu já não me quero explicar mais. Estou cansada."
About the author
"As I grew up I was confronted with the (almost) inexistence of empowered black women in my socio-cultural circuit. My mother and my elementary school teacher were the only positive references for black women I had access to. Inevitably, this clouded my view of the world, which ended up conditioning the understanding of my possibilities, betraying my ambitions.
With this show I hope to be able to contribute to the change of this paradigm. "
(Lara Mesquita)
AS SOON AS I WAKE is an independent production developed by a group of young creators, artists and technicians from the areas of Theater and Cinema.
