The available funds will be directly applied to the purchase of land, with nature conservation objectives, we intend to protect biodiversity and contribute to an appreciation that there is no opposition between conservation and economics.

The members of MONTIS – Nature Conservation Association plan to buy two properties that will constitute the initial core of a private nature reserve dedicated to nature conservation and public use.

These 5.5 hectares of oak forests at Serra do Caramulo are rich in biodiversity and are a place of great beauty with stunning landscapes. The agricultural abandonment has allowed the remarkable recovery of natural vegetation, with some risks like wildfires. Through a delicate management, with nature conservation objectives, we intend to protect biodiversity and creating value with it.

Nature conservation is not always susceptible of generating financial return on its cost.

In these circumstances: a) either common people mobilize funds from other activities to pay for conservation; b) or the State fully assumes those costs; c) or the natural values are likely to be passed over against more rational decisions from the point of view of immediate return of the properties.

This project will ensure that the investment will be directly applied to the purchase of land, avoiding profitability pressures.

It will be possible to visit these areas, which are managed primarily for conservation making them different and allowing contact with landscapes, plants and animals that are rarely found in another context.

A previous agreement with Arada (Portuguese Wind Power Company) allows us to have one more euro for every four euros raised in the campaign, strengthening the management capacity.
