SELF illustration

There will be created a collection of Selfies for an exhibition in creative space EKA (unity) in Lisbon and compiled a book for publishing when the quantity would reach at least one thousand and one Selfies.

The art market no longer passes through the galleries and museums, today we have a much more  versatile and democratic way, the universe of digital communication, where the image is shared and travels infinitely. Within this perspective, I propose the following project as a way to sponsor my visual creation.

Nowadays taking Selfies has turned into fashion and we can no longer live without almost daily sharing of our images. “SELF Illustration” is a proposal from the artistic creation, where real characters are the basis of the personal distorted vision of reality. The idea is to confront an artistic aesthetic, always very intimate and unique with the “human reality” of a Selfie.

There will be created a collection of Selfies for an exhibition in creative space EKA (unity) in Lisbon and compiled a book for publishing when the quantity would reach at least one thousand and one Selfies. At this moment there already exist more than 700 Illustrations. Under no circumstances the references to the photos will be displayed.

It would be easier to collect free images that various social networks offer us and randomly choose the necessary Selfies, however the authors of Selfies won’t have any contact with the illustrations derived therefrom. Thus this crowdfunding project provides a way to truly engage funders in the outcome of the product.

It is necessary a great amount of Selfies for this project, as well as money compensation for the realization of an exhibition and book publishing. After sending your Selfie to e-mail, you will receive an illustration in digital format depending on the value donated (more info in rewards).

Supporting this project means financial help for the continuation of the plastic exploration of such contemporary themes as stereotyping, fashion or fake image.

About the author

Hugo Travanca is an independent visual artist who works in painting, illustration and in some specific areas of graphic design. Resides in Sintra and is currently writing a PhD thesis (University of Barcelona), where he explores the concept of illustrative style in painting as contemporary pictorial vanguard.

He believes that an image is always a false thing and starts to consider that the falsehood of a created image is only possible because it has its inspiration source, what is called false “reality”. All the artwork is built with the same design aesthetic identity and the project “SELF Illustration” is one more example of his creation.
