Surgical strike

The nurses are struggling to save SNS.

The nurses are in mourning and struggling for a frankly better SNS. We do not want the health of the Portuguese privatized. All citizens must continue to have the right to their health. Have you ever wondered if you suddenly became ill and could not go to a health institution because you lacked financial means? We can not let such situations be a reality in our country.

The SNS is at risk and, being one of the greatest Portuguese achievements, we have to unite to defend it.

Nurses are undoubtedly the pillar of the SNS, but without motivated professionals and in adequate numbers it is not possible to perform miracles. The SNS needs more human means and more physical means but essentially from having professionals motivated to work.

At this moment the nurses have not progressed for more than 13 years. They do not have a career in sight and do many overtime a month to fill the government's hiring gap. For all these reasons and many more nurses need to go to the fight.

We decided to change our ways of fighting and bet on a surgical strike.

The objective of this campaign is to create a solidarity fund to support OR nurses who join a surgical strike as these colleagues do not ensure minimal care and therefore lose their full salary.

We believe that this form of fighting will have more impact because many surgeries will be canceled and delayed causing great damage to the boss.

The surgical strike movement consists of practice nurses who intend to implement this form of struggle in 3 large hospitals:

• Centro Hospitalar São João, Porto;
• Centro Hospitalar e Universitário de Coimbra;
• Centro Hospitalar Lisboa Norte.

We know that in order to advance this form of struggle we need at least one of the existing syndicates to issue a notice of strike and at this time we do not yet have the formal support of any, but we believe that if there is money syndicates will manifest their support.

About the author

We are Nurses of practice and we believe that we will succeed with this measure pressing the government to negotiate without further delay a worthy career for nurses!

Our primary objective is to show the government that nurses are united and that we can stop the SNS because we are in fact the mainstay of the SNS.

We want syndicates to be truly called upon to negotiate a decent nursing career based on the guiding principles signed by all.

It is these practical nurses who will manage this fund.

It is time to say enough, but for this it is necessary the contribution of all of us nurses to the bottom with the value that is possible to you. Being that we stipulate a minimum value of 20 €.

Budget and due dates

Our goal is € 300 000.

We can not tell how long this value will come because we would be giving the government data that must be kept secret. We may have to ask for reinforcement of this fund in the medium term.

A percentage of 7.5% corresponding to the PPL utilization rate will be deducted from the total amount. We tried to find cheaper solutions to fund raising, but this was the most transparent, economic and practical way we could find.

If at the end of the strike there is still money left in the solidarity fund, this amount will be donated to a social solidarity institution.

The deadline for collecting funds will be November 5.

This campaign is all or nothing, which means that if we have not reached the goal on the 5th, the funds will be returned and the measure can not be put into practice.
