With this initiative the MeteoCovilhã want to count on the support of all your followers and friends together to angariarmos two detectors of electric shock to be placed one in the city of Covilha and another at the highest point in mainland Portugal more properly Tower to 1993 meters altitude.

With this new equipment we can provide a better public service at the level of extreme events and detecting electrical discharges while being part of an international group that are taking the first steps on the Iberian Peninsula. In Portugal we would have the detector installed at the highest point of the country.

The Blitzortung is a network of lightning detection for the location of electromagnetic discharges in the atmosphere (lightning) based on time of arrival (TOA) and time of arrival method group (TOGA). It consists of several receptors of spokes and a central processing server. The stations transmit their data at short time intervals over the Internet, these data are available to the public.

About the author

The meteocovilhã consists of one person, Alfredo Draught.

I always felt a great interest in weather science, a topic which was consolidated with a degree in Civil Protection. Decided to implement a station in the city of Covilha to address the lack of meteorological data in the Serra da Estrela region. At this time already counting on two more stations one Penhas Health 1500m and 2000m at the Tower, the same think presto an information service permanent population and try to make people aware of the conditions they may encounter in this region where I live. Over time I was providing weather information for the Municipio of Covilha, Portugal Roads, GNR and other public and private entities.

The acquisition of electric shock detectors will be an asset to the meteocovilhã it will give more to the service so that the meteocovilha continue growing credibility.

The budget required for the acquisition of the equipment is 500 euros and tale arrive at this figure with the help of all by the end of October to become operational in early winter.
