We are in the process of building a space but we are in need of financial help to get our project CRIDO - (Centre for the Recovery and Interpretation of the Hedgehog) off the ground.
Amigos Picudos – Associação para a Preservação e Protecção de Ouriços (Association for the preservation and protection of hedgehogs) is set up as a charity and is the only one in Portugal dedicated exclusively to these animals.
Hedgehogs are one of the most primitive mammals in the planet. They have kept themselves virtually unaltered for the past 15 million years! This is long before we walked the Earth but that does not mean that these amazing animals have adapted to the chaotic world created by humans. In addition to natural causes such as predators, disease, etc, they are subject to human beings’ excessive activity: loss of habitat, mechanised agriculture, pesticides, being run over, gardening tool accidents, climate changes, human cruelty, etc.
As a consequence of all of the above, European Hedgehogs (native species) are in decline! Throughout Europe, several institutions are making tremendous efforts to counteract this population decline and increase their numbers again.
Hedgehogs, like butterflies, are seen as species “indicative” of the ecosystem’s health. They act as ecological pest controllers and their disappearance, in addition to being the result of habitat degradation, would cause an imbalance in the ecosystem. Not to mention how sad it would be if human beings let yet another charismatic species disappear from the face of the Earth.
We believe that this association is an added value to the protection and preservation of this species, by educating and bringing awareness to the population in regards to the issues affecting the wild fauna and this species in particular (there are 16 species of hedgehog in total).
We firmly believe that the only spiky mammal in Europe, seen as a “flag” species, deserves special focus, similar to the work carried out by other associations/institutions (United Kingdom, Ireland, France, The Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Denmark, etc.).
Maia Municipal Hall supported us by lending us a space. At this moment, we are carrying out renovation work but we are in need of financial help. Lush Portugal supported this project but the amount at our disposal does not cover everything. In addition to the renovation work, we are missing some furniture (stainless steel tables and counters, bookcases, chairs, autoclave, incubator, stethoscope, infirmary material, etc.).
We are counting on your help to make our project CRIDO – Centro de Recuperação e Interpretação do Ouriço (Centre for the Recovery and Interpretation of the Hedgehog) a reality.

Queremos agradecer a todos os que nos ajudaram até ao momento, aos apoiantes identificados e aos anónimos pelo seu precioso contributo.
Falta pouco, já atingimos 82% do objectivo! Faltam menos de 450€. O sucesso da campanha depende muito da divulgação, vamos continuar o esforço!
